Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe it is an offence not to show a valid ticket when asked to do so even if you do actually hold a valid ticket. How does this apply to unstaffed gatelines if the more agile folk decide to follow the olympic legacy advice to take up sport and hurdle over an unstaffed gateline in possession of a valid ticket ?

Out of curiosity what is the story with cambridge at the moment, all of the barriers are open quite a lot, but they are still turned on and staff enforcing people to scan their tickets, but I've seen quite a few get around this...

You are still required to show a vaild ticket for your journey on demand.
Byelaw 17. (2): A person shall hand over his ticket for inspection when asked to do so by an authorised person.
If you were to refuse, then you would be in breach of this Byelaw and thus it is an offence albeit a civil one.

Vaulting over the barriers is also an offence.
Byelaw 9. (2): Where the entrance to or exit from any platform or station is via an automatic ticket barrier no person shall enter or leave the station, except with permission from an authorised person, without passing through the barrier in the correct manner.

That almost sounds like you could get prosecuted for using a non-barriered exit at stations where only some exits are barriered...

Well theres no way we would have put our All Line Rovers through automatic barriers. We passed through gatelines nineteen times in two weeks, so thats 38 prosecutions in total!

West Hampstead, St.Albans and Harpenden have an alternative exit which is gated and unstaffed. They are supposedly monitored from the staffed area. Apparently in this situation it is okay to have unstaffed gatelines.

Rovers generally don't work barriers anyway, so have to be inspected manually.

Hurdling over ticket barriers is not recommended especially if you're Brazilian and using the Underground...........

West Hampstead? The LO station? If so that is, I believe, against TfL guidelines and should not happen. If it's West Hampstead Thameslink, then sadly the DfT allows this as they do not have as high standards as TfL

Swindon has an unstaffed (always unstaffed) ticket barrier for the North Star side bridge. It has a camera and a screen so the ticket barrier staff down in the tunnel at the main entrance can see what ticket is held by asking over the intercom for the person to press it to the screen. Seems a bit complex given I've never even seen the bridge used by anyone other than the WHSmith staff going out for a fag.

Also Swindon has a disabled ramp onto platform 4 that if you ask to use, the don't tend to check the ticket. They just let you through. I went up one day to customer services to ask if I could get out for a fag and the bloke wrote the code down for the gate for me and said use that when you wanna smoke.

Yes, it is West Hampstead Thameslink which has the old entrance ticket barriers unstaffed. The large gate is always left open in my experience. have not seen any references to show your ticket to CCTV, as per Huntingdon. Perhaps that is not up and running yet.
