Went for a few days to Hungary in October, went by train Budapest-Tiszafured-Debrecen. As you might expect, the services were rather slow, adequate but a bit basic and quite cheap. My father-in-law was happy enough though, as an EC pensioner he could travel for free!

The Tiszafured-Debrecen is mostly single-track and a bit bouncy, but good for watching wildlife out of window passing through the Hortobagy - we saw a couple of hundred migrating cranes. On the return from Debrecen in the dark the train made several calls at small rural stations which were totally unlit with no announcements, so I presume they expect passengers to know exactly where the train is at any given point!

Lots of blue electric locos with small yellow warning panels in Budapest looking rather like Manchester circa 1966!
