Humza Yousaf sets out Scottish independence plan (Link is to BBC article)

It seems the one trick pony that it is the SNP has found another 'path to independence' that's doomed to well-deserved failure from the off: Taking a victory in Scotland at the next GE as a mandate to begin negotiations with Westminster for Scottish independence.

From the article:

The text states that if the party wins the most seats, the Scottish government will be "empowered to begin immediate negotiations with the UK government to give democratic effect to Scotland becoming an independent country".

[...]

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton said: "It seems like Humza Yousaf and Stephen Flynn have lost the plot.

"They had a gold standard referendum and lost it but now they want to invent a crackpot alternative that allows them to lose a bunch of seats but still break up the UK with a fraction of the vote."

[...]

There is no guarantee that the next UK government would be willing to engage in such a conversation, especially if the SNP was
[sic] to finish with fewer Westminster seats than they currently have.

Both the Conservatives and Labour insist that they will continue to stand against independence.

Even Brexit was one person one vote. How do the SNP expect to gain legitimacy on first past the post ?

Well quite.

I wonder what would happen if they lost the second referendum in two-thirds-of-a-generation's-time? Campaign for a third one? Obviously they would. I thought I'd seen the end of such blatant bad-loserishness when I graduated pre-school.

To be fair, the Scottish National Party can’t really give up without disbanding and jumping off the gravy train!

Humza Yousaf becomes more deluded by the day. His plan is doomed to failure because;

1. Even when the SNP have won the majority of seats, whether at Westminster or Holyrood, it is with less than 50% of the votes cast.
2. Regardless of their 'a vote for the SNP is a vote for independence' mantra, people do vote SNP for other reasons.
3. That mantra might (hopefully) actually turn some away from voting SNP.
4. Westminster would refuse to negotiate with the SNP anyway.

It is, like so many other things, a scheme designed to achieve nothing else than yet another grievance with Westminster. But I suppose he had to do something to stop the obsessed zealots turning on him.

Not only is this record so badly scratched and broken that listening to it is excruciating pain to even the most toned death, but usually when he finds yet another path to independence on his stained and outdated map, he only goes down it making a lot of noise in the process to cover something else up for stop what are they covering? A further overspend on fated ships eight zero one and eight zero two? The fact that you have to wait three years for cataract surgery in Scotland now? The recent drug death figures? The fact that their short term rental licensing scheme is about to go at the same way as the gender reforms and the deposit returns scheme? The list is quite frankly endless and the sooner they can sign the overbanged independence drum to the music room of antiquity and step aside so that someone even vaguely competent can come in and sort out the messy experiment gone wrong that is Scottish devolution the better

Which reading between the lines I think some of his party might actually want them to do, notice how the support for the senior team and some of them madcap madness he's nowhere near as strong as it once was

Spot and and its staggering how the population is so taken in with this false horizon. The Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election will be the turning point.

Such a plan would make the Truss government look democratic, well thought out and competent in comparison.

That would be quite an achievement.

SNP need to concentrate on dealing with Scotland's basic needs first rather then expending anymore effort on the Independence nonsense. If in a decade, presuming they still remain in overall control, basic society needs have been sorted thats the time to have another vote.

To be honest I'm still surprised at the number of delusional people that voted for them last night, okay so an awful lot more voted elsewhere and the vote was split by the fact of there being so many candidates but 8000 odd totally deluded individuals still support this quite frankly dangerous bunch of clowns

The irony in this is that if there was not such a complete state of chaos and turmoil in Scottish politics we would now be coming up to the point where they could theoretically say that once in a generation had now been reached and another referendum might be justified, I wonder which party will offer this as a sweetener for their support in a minority Westminster government

The SNP have been in power at Holyrood for to long and need a spell in opposition.

Just as the current Tory Administration at Westminster has become stale, a fate that overcame the previous Labour and Tory Governments, they need to be replaced.

ISTR an SNP politician saying that a decisive win for them in this by election would send Westminster an irresistible message that Scotland's desire for independence could no longer be resisted; Hopefully the actual result has instead sent the SNP an irresistible message that their dream is a dead duck and that the Scottish Government should focus on, well, just governing Scotland. But I won't hold my breath.....

(It is perhaps worth noting also that the Greens, propping up the SNP and with two ministers in the Scottish Government, received precisely 2 (two) percent of the vote)

Precisely why I stopped voting for them some time ago. The sole aim of independence at the expense of even the most basic of services is just off putting. Given that those of us in Scotland who work pay a fair bit more in tax than rUK it is not unreasonable to expect our services to be in a better state. Blaming Westminster is tiresome when a lot is down to Holyrood.

Sort out day to day living first and I’d maybe come back to supporting them. Until then I’m out, these guys can’t even competently run a fire service, which is something that should be difficult to get wrong!
