[Not specific to Hulley's]
It is a measure of last resort in the industry to remove a
local service bus to provide a school service. Although infrequently it certainly does happen. Simply put an operator will get in far more hot water more quickly by failing to operate a school service v. failing to operate a local service.

Depends, where you were going. Some of their local services could have other schools to serve or are another area which is 'high priority' to not cancel. Could a bus do your trip and get back in time? I don't know.
Looking at the Facebook post though, seems that, Hulleys lack of communication strikes again. Funny how they complain about councils not keeping them informed of road works yet they fail to keep the public informed of a heavily delayed or cancelled service. Hypocrites.

This might be one for another topic but Hulleys left children stranded outside of Lady Manners School for 90 minutes after the bus should have showed up yesterday due to apparent driver shortages which I have no reason to disbelieve. By all accounts the Deputy Head Teacher kept everyone sane
I totally accept a small company can have staff issues but I was in Bakewell yesterday and my bus left bang on time around the same time the school bus should have showed up. Whilst I may have been disgruntled about my bus being cancelled, I think I would have prioritised the school over me, why wasnt this a consideration, is there some planning thing between services I am missing?
"Due to a sudden Driver shortage the M17 journeys at 1450/1550 ex Dore, and 1520/1620 ex Jordanthorpe will not be running today."
Only a handful travel on that, possibly 6 on an earlier journey I saw yesterday. It is usually very reliable. Clearly a bit of a crisis yesterday so that's probably where they got the driver to take the late school bus.

The report was an afternoon school bus was very late due to a driver shortage, while a normal public service was on time. Had the report been they failed to send a bus to the school and the school had to phone parents and told them to collect their children, it would have been a different matter.
I notice the person making the claim didn't seem able to say whether the bus they were on would have been big enough for the school service. Cancelling a public bus to run a school service on time would be no good if the bus is too small and a second bus is required for the pupils left behind by the first.
Due to staffing issues, service M17 will change from Saturday 19 February 2022 until further notice. The service will only run on Monday to Friday. There will be no service on Saturdays starting from Saturday 19 February 2022.
An “new” addition to the fleet comes in the form of LK58 CSU - a dual door, MCV-bodied Dart from Metroline. A photo can be found on Twitter, showing it in Hulley’s fleet livery…
Derbyshire County Council used to have some of the clearest timetables and bus stop signage in the country. It's sad to see the decline in standards which are no doubt due to budget cuts. At least they've not done a "Cumbria" and cut all subsidised services.

Peak District bus operator Hulleys of Baslow has received a £100,000 loan from NPIF – Mercia Debt Finance, which is managed by Mercia and is part of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund (NPIF), to protect its service for Peak District residents.
Sounds like a vote of confidence from the financiers: presumably this scale of loan is only offered where the funders can see strong prospects for a solid income stream to cover the repayments.

Apparently in addition to the 55, Hulleys are taking over the 56 Chesterfield - Alfreton service from Stagecoach in May which wouldn't surprise me but I haven't seen anything official yet
Sundays only - but brilliant.
Confusing though - the 257 will go over the Snake pass to Glossop, then via the route of the High Peak 61 to Hayfield, then Chapel-en-le-Frith (presumably not via Whaley bridge therefore) and then via the really narrow western approach to Castleton. Meanwhile they are also introducing a Sunday 61 from Glossop to Hayfield then Whaley Bridge and Buxton, just like High Peak's route. Are these just positioning journeys for the 257 - otherwise these appear to duplicate and not link together at all.
Surprised at the X70 going, looked pretty busy on some journeys when I was there last month. I'm not sure the 170 is going to be any quicker even without going to Holymoorside, while diverting 172s delays them quite a bit - I wonder is this just Youlgrave or Middleton too?
Just seen on an MP’s feed that High Peak have dropped their Sunday 61 - sounds like it was ran commercially. Hulleys 61 will apparently run every 3 hours which means just one bus running out & back. I wonder if these 257s are a commercial positioning move at the start/end of the contract?

I think the 257 is longer planned than that - when they launched their winter timetables it briefly showed a summer extension of a service over snake to hayfield and Castleton (I’m sure it was the 7 though). So I suspect it’s just a recast of that to accomodate the 61.
I am surprised that anyone living around the Hulleys network has a clue what number or route their local bus is any more. Hulleys network changes so often. Any other bus company, it's a network revamp every year or so with one or two changes through the year to improve reliability. With Hulleys though, every few months the whole network seems to change. The 172 has gone through a good few iterations, as has the 257. The 84 was only withdrawn in September and now it's back again. It's no wonder Hulleys can struggle with viability at times, their routes are about as stable as toddler learning to walk!

And for those who may have difficulty reading photos, or use a screen reader:

New route replacing the Monday - Saturday Service 170 between Chesterfield and Holymoorside. Journeys will also extend to Lady Manners School replacing Service X70.

The 1215 and 1300 journeys from Bakewell will be combined in to a 1240 (Service 172) which will additionally serve Youlgrave. The 1150 and 1350 journeys from Matlock will also serve Youlgrave in place of Service 171.
Service 173
All journeys will now start from Bakewell Square. Buses will serve Shutts Lane replacing
Service 170. The frequency between Bakewell and Shutts Lane will remain hourly.
Service 257
British Summer Time (BST) timetable will be in effect. On Sundays, buses will no longer serve Bamford but extend over Snake Pass to Glossop, Hayfield, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Castleton.
In an effort to improve timekeeping and reliability, buses will no longer serve The Moor in Sheffield. Buses leaving Sheffield will now pick up at the Interchange, Cathedral and West Street.
The 257 and all Derbyshire changes are now up on Derbyshire's website. Sunday's 257 is two hourly to Castleton via Glossop, five journeys. Not very long turnaround times, if traffic gets heavy I worry whether the timetable is sufficiently robust. A western approach to Castleton is exciting, years since we had that. Will this mean only Solos will be able to get there? I hope its a success.

Does look like it avoids going anywhere near Mottram-in-Longdendale, the legendary traffic in which must surely have been one of the killers for the X57 to Manchester.
The 257 appears to be using Winnats Pass which gets very busy in summer and at weekends. It's narrow and steep so banned to large vehicles so a full sized bus would be inappropriate. Despite the ban It's not unknown for articulated HGVs to get through the Hope Valley to Castleton without appreciating the significance of the signage. With no easy place to turn they carry on up the pass.
