Hull Trains to serve Beverley

I noticed the other day that these services do appear in printed timetable booklets and posters.

It was in the Hull Daily Mail as a full page article at some point when I was at home for Christmas, can't remember if they mentioned anything about a start date though

Starts tomorrow. I trust this won't cause any potential problems with my service from Hull - eg if there were signal problems between Beverley and Hull.

Depends on if the service is at Beverly at the time! If it's not headed up towards Beverly yet then most likely they'll just cancel it between Beverly and Hull and run it to time. If the problem happens once it's on the Yorkshire Coast line then any delay there could affect it from Hull.

But, in my experience, the line is fairly reliable so I wouldn't worry too much

I did wonder if this would happen eventually, great innovation from Hull Trains though to make it happen! The southbound also provides a much earlier connection into Hull for Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester which is great news. It might help to stem the tide of people who drive from the Beverley area to Brough to pick up trains there.

I'm not going to lie though, I'm slightly disappointed that the train won't be calling at Cottingham given there is no connection into Hull (even by bus) for this train. Is there an issue with platform length?

For got sake don't stop at Cottingham. It's only a suburb of Hull and the new service brilliant though it is is already slower then most connection services.

Cottingham is not a 'suburb of Hull', it is a completely separate settlement in the East Riding with a population of 17,000. There's less need for the northbound to call, but southbound, early morning connections from the village are actually very poor. This service would provide valuable earlier connections not just to London, but also to Hull, Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester and beyond. Furthermore, given the speed limit through the station is only 25 mph (I *think*), it's hardly going to lengthen journey times dramatically...

Perhaps some previous idiotic cost-cutting rationalisation has seen the platform become too short for a 5 car 180. I haven't measured it, but I do know it used to be served by 8-car DMUs at busy/holiday times.

Hmm you can fit four car 158s (23m vehicle length) on both platforms comfortably so I would be surprised if you couldn't squeeze a 5 car 180 (also 23m vehicle length) in to the station.

Even if the platform is too short this isn't really an issue as Class 180s are SDO fitted.

Doesn't Cottingham have Hull University? That could be a factor for stopping there

Cottingham has the student population which live in halls of residence but the University itself is in Hull about half-way between Cottingham and the city centre. The vast majority of the student population not in halls live houses in the streets and estates around the University in Hull and it's probably quicker from there to go to the city centre station than it would be to go to Cottingham.

Interestingly here HT's contribution, which is an interesting variation on the usual kinds of requirements OAOs have to meet.

The Investment Conditions relating to Beverley
The Train Operator shall by no later,than 31 March 2015 provide Network Rail with:
a) A payment of £45,000 which will contribute to the installation by Network Rail of
safety mitigation equipment at five level crossings between Hull and Beverley.
b) Written support to close the following footpath crossings: Cottingham and Snuff Mill
Lane.
The Train Operator shall by no later than 31 March 2015 obtain local highway
authority written support and provide this to Network Rail to enable the closure of
the following footpath crossings: England Springs and Footpath 13R.

I'm glad they didn't get around to closing Snuff Mill Lane a few years ago. It's a useful short-cut between University and Cottingham!

Leave Beverley 0955 Sat; 1050 Sun.
Return arrivals at 2036 Sat; 2041 Sun.
