1) Do I have to ring up Hull Trains to book my tickets, or can I book them at my local booking office?

2) Why is a Single to Hull cheaper than a Single to Donny?

You should be able to purchase a Hull Trains ticket at your local agent

This is part of the agreement Hull Trains have, and their fares must NOT be cheaper than GNER

London Terminals - Hull is £75.50 for an "Any Permitted" Saver Return, the "Hull Trains Only" Saver Single is £36.50 (equating to £73 return, so pointless if you only go one way).

London Terminals - Doncaster is £63.80 for an "Any Permitted" Saver Return, the "Hull Trains Only" Saver Single is £30.50 (equating to £62 return, equally pointless)

There is only really one benefit to Hull Trains: they will sell discounted tickets, such as Savers, on board the train with railcard discounts when the ticket office is open (you can see this on departure boards as "TICKETS FOR SALE ON HULL TRAINS" - of course, they are also sold on GNER but only at a premium (Standard Open/Day and no railcard discounts) and that's the key difference).

The other day I was (unusually) on a HT service, and was talking to a young lady who had a Y-P discounted Saver Single, she was having a 'debate' with the conductor about a reservation she thought she had - but didn't. Anyway, she had no idea that the "Any Permitted" return was about the same price as the singles she was buying and gave her much more flexibility. She won't be buying HT-only tickets again...

What ticket is this?

I know that the cheapest advance purchase is £15, which is actually more expensive than GNER (the cheapest being £10), and GNER generally have better availability.

For some reason Hull Trains scrapped their Saver Return, although to be honest I have no idea why! I seem to remember it was priced pretty well below GNER too!

Certain long-distance return tickets are now being phased out
The SuperSaver has already been phased out, and the Saver (return) is expected to be phased out by the end of 2008

The Saver Half Return is due to be renamed, and no doubt will result in a hidden fares increase

This is also why on some routes Day Returns and Cheap Day Returns have appeared
Ironically, splitting journeys using these may be cheaper in the future

The SuperSaver hasn't been phased out - it's still available on quite a lot of journies to Wales from the south of England.
