Hull Trains set at Peterborough station

What happened to the Class 180 on the 18:50 Kings Cross to Hull working yesterday, got into Peterborough on the way home and it had been detrained and was stopped in Platform 4.

Went out for the day today and noticed it was still there in one of the though sidings to the west of Platforms 4/5 that the freights usually use.

Would have thought it would have been moved into the Nene sidings, I know from time to time non FCC trains have used the sidings.

Anyone know what's up with it, apart from it's a 180 and they're always breaking down....

It broke down,it was late into the cross to form the 1851 and left late eventually failing in pl4 at p/boro delaying the EC lincoln service and yours truly on 1918 GC service due to only having 2 engines running !

It would be interesting to know what the mechanical status of the unit was before leaving KGX. If it had already lost engines wouldn't it have been more sensible to cancel altogether and transfer pax to EC?

Only slightly off-topic, but this raises an issue on the intended IEP bi-mode configuration.

As I understand it, a bi-mode 5-car will have three engines of a rating similar to a 180 (QSK19 or similar).

It will only need to drop one engine to be in the same predicament as the failed 180 at Peterborough.

That'll be fun north of Edinburgh.

I know East Coast have been accepting both Hull Trains and Grand Central tickets recently due to various cancellations, faults etc...

I'm positive though that while waiting time before I dispatched the Hull Trains set one time last year, the Train Manager clearly stated they must have a minimum of 3 of 5 engines in full working order - any less would result in the service being cancelled and passengers going forward on East Coast and Northern.

Don't know if this policy has changed but wouldn't it be safer as you have said to cancel the service and request ticket acceptance with East Coast - the faulty set could head to Ferme Park then head back in time for the set which forms the 20:30 to Hull to couple onto it to drag it DIT as a 10 car train.

What's the guidelines for Grand Central then if you have less then 3 engines in full working order for their 180s.

Same as Hull Trains,3 is the minimum number of engines allowed to be in traffic,any less then its a failure I'm afraid !!! You can still reach 125mph on 3 engines as long as the terrain is level or falling,inclines are a no no !!!

Pardon! How is it possible that certain members of the 180 class don't couple to each other! How can this be? That’s ludicrous!

A few people have said it to me, but I don't know if it's true. It is entirely possible. Supposedly they have stickers on the faulty couplers.

asylumxl if you're refering to a yellow "sticker" on only the coupler at one end of a 220/221 unit then it actually is to denote it being the DMF (Driving Motor First). 185's also have a yellow coupling box on the 1st class end.

The 180's have had a yellow dot painted on the couplers to show that they have had modified bushes and grease fitted.

I have also heard of problems with the DMDS vehicles trying to couple with other DMDS vehicles as the TMS software gets 'confused'. I think this has only been a problem since they have been operated by different TOC's due to running different software versions.
