I actually saw this set sitting at Swindon at about 09.25 yesterday morning. I didn't twig that it was the set destined for Hull Trains as it was shown as a St Phillips Marsh to Reading working.

At least get rid of Great Western. Keep First and logo just put Hull Trains on instead. At least this means 43165 will retain its name which is a first for HT.

Why do people want Hull Trains to waste several hours / days of a Rolling Stock Technician's time removing some vinyls?

If I were a Hull Trains customer I'd far prefer them to use the time / money on their existing fleet!

Probably something to do with the fact it is still a GWR asset. It is being hired in same as the EMT powercar to East Coast.

This appears to only be 5 carriages long; does this mean it will be limited to 100mph (similar to the ScotRail sets)?

5-car HST sets are permitted to operate at 125mph (Virgin Crosscountry and Grand Central have both operated such formations), it's only sets with 4 cars or less that are restricted to 100mph.

I believe it's an as hoc spare, so no fixed diagrams AFAIK

Technically (and legally) it is an Angel Trains asset.

Given that it will have to be de-branded before it goes off lease later in the year, it would have been sensible to do it before it went to Hull.

The hired in EMT powercars are different as they work with EMT on diagram to Cricklewood, and they're only hired in occasionally when there's a shortage of 91s!

The NL65 powercars have nothing to do with EMT, they are leased directly to LNER, they haven't bothered to remove the EMT branding!

I'm sure the passengers don't give a stuff as long as a train turns up at the right time and reaches its destination. It's hardly a priority,

According to HT Twitter it will have a diagram, but I believe at the moment like you said it's a spare. Probably best positioned at Doncaster West Yard for when the 180s decide they dont want to go south of Donny and they expect passengers to GTR and coach home...

So from what it obviously sounds like is after leaving Doncaster getting up to 125 is taking it's toll on the unreliable engines causing them to fail?

I really dont know to be honest - I've not been back to South Yorkshire since I moved to Manchester, but if the 180s only have 3 or less working engines they cant achieve 125mph so Hull Trains curtails them to run Donny to Hull only.

Was that partly also to do with 86101 being hired some years back to work KGX-Donny.

Are short HSTs definitely speed restricted? I only ask as while I've seen such asserted over the years I've never seen any proof of it; certainly the sectional appendix only mentions trains of Mk1, Mk2 or Mk3 sleepers being restricted in speed kf short-formed.

After the power car discs were altered and the two-stage braking disabled, I don't think a short formed set would have trouble in meeting the W125 braking curve anyway.
