Hi all,

Hope you are all well. I've been reading these forums for a while now, and this is my first post so please be gentle :)

I've been looking for a while on getting into the rail industry, and I have recently completed an application for the Trainee Conductor Hull position with Northern. I was invited on Friday to complete 2 online tests, the verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning ones, so fingers crossed they are ok and I progress to the next stage - I will keep you informed.

My question, if anyone can help, is around pay. Just to help me manage my expectations and arrange my finances accordingly. On the job advert it says the salary, but also mentions +potential shift allowance, and overtime. What would this look like, roughly if anybody knows that would be great - my current salary is just above this one - but I really want to get into the industry and start a new career (14 years in Retail is enough for anyone :))

I've done shifts most of my life, but does any body know roughly what the shift pattern is like out of Hull for Northern conductors, and is it 4 days or 5 (advert says 35 hours average).

Obviously I understand I might not pass the tests (hopefully I will), or even get the job.

Many thanks in advance for any help at all. davedjc84

Thanks for that, very helpful - sounds very doable for me then. What do you mean by throw in 99/100 Sundays? I'm more than happy to work Sundays and the odd rest days, not an issue.

Do you know what the shift allowance is, or is that depot dependent?

Fingers crossed I get through to the next stage. I'll be back for more advice if I do :)

Thanks again much appreciated.

I decided I had potentially put too much info on a public forum and felt uncomfortable. However if you post 2 more messages on any section of the forum I am happy to send you the same info by private message.
