Hull to York Sundays

Hi there,

I am looking at travelling between Hull and York on Sunday 4th of September as part of a through ticket to Scotland and I have noticed that on Sundays services seem to only go as far as Selby and then there is a bus service between Selby and York. It gives a journey time of 25 minutes is this a realistic time and if I was to miss my connection due to the bus arriving late into York would I be rebooked onto another service?

I was looking at travelling on the 17:23 from Hull arriving into Selby at 17:56 and then bus service from Selby to York at 18:05 arriving 18:30 connecting to East Coast to Edinburgh at 18:56.

Is there a reason for there being a bus service on a Sunday? If anyone can help with this or give any advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

National Rail Enquiries also offers a 16.58 from Hull with a change to Cross Country at Leeds - arrival 22.14 in Glasgow Central.
Fares shown are the same as via Selby / York bus. Interestingly too a later departure is shown via Doncaster at the same fares - not sure that is valid.

However, is anyone able to state clearly if an ALL RAIL journey by a slightly longer route is acceptable when substitue road transport is used?

25 minutes does look optimistic for a 23km journey along A roads with much of it through York and Selby built up areas. Viamichelin suggests 28 minutes.
However you have 26 minutes to play with!

AFAIK you should be able to get on the next train should the bus be late but experts here should be able to confirm this.

The OP doesn't specify where his ticket is to, therefore it does make looking up permitted routes difficult. However for journeys from Hull to York & beyond, it is permitted to travel via Doncaster. It is also permitted to travel via Leeds, and there is no problem doubling back Micklefield-Leeds as this is within Leeds Group.

For Hull-York, there is a cheaper ticket routed "Not Doncaster" that does not permit travel via Doncaster (but you can still go via Leeds).

Google maps suggest 33mind from station to station, taking the fact it's a Sunday, I cannot see any worries about taking longer than 35mins

I can see major worries about taking a lot longer than 35 minutes!

Sunday 4th September is "Press Family Raceday" Last Race: 17:20. Not sure what time that will finish, but the roads around York station around 18:30 could be absolutely horrendous!

I would be looking to take a train via either Doncaster or Leeds, and I'd aim to NOT change trains at York if you want a seat!

Assuming the final destination is Edinburgh, I recommend:

Hull 1641
Doncaster 1731

Doncaster 1810
Edinburgh 2118

If you do not already have a ticket, the single price (assuming no railcards) for an Advance ticket with this itinerary is only £21.60, or £36.45 in First Class. Expect the train to be extremely busy with boisterous people between York and Newcastle.

If the final destination is Glasgow, then as long as you specify Glasgow Queen St, the same fare applies in Std, or £1.80 more in 1st.

Thanks for the information it is appreciated.

The reason for travelling via York was to connect to the 18:56 service to Glasgow Central which would save changing at Edinburgh and enable us to be on the same train the whole way through from York.

I am a little aprehensive though if there is going to be a lot of traffic and possibly missing the train as a result although it would be purchased as a complete journey with East Coast.

The reason for taking the train via York and not Leeds is due to having many poor experiences on Crosscountry and I much prefer East Coast.

If you miss the train, you'll just have to get the next one. There's nothing to be apprehensive about in terms of validity, the only downside is that you would arrive later. If you are apprehensive about being back in Glasgow for a certain time, then I would suggest the earlier itinerary. On the other hand, if you are delayed for more than 30 minutes you can make a Delay Repay claim.

via Leeds would still go via York, as would going via Doncaster, but I agree EC is a better option. The itinerary I posted above is with EC.
