Hull to Barton.

I am doing an ALR soon and am pricing up the cost of the journeys I plan to make. (to see how much I will "save" over the seven days)
One of the journeys is Hull to Barton-on-Humber.
This involves a walk to the bus station part of Hull station and a bus over the bridge to Barton station.
The only fare that comes up for the trip is a staggering £31.40!!
(Or even £42.00 from Bridlington and a true rip-off fare of £53.00 for 1st class, where NO 1st class facilities are offered.

Does anyone know what it costs really to do the bridge?

I would suggest ignoring what the journey planner and says and consider the EYMS Service 350 (see timetable here) not sure how much it will cost but I will eat my hat if it's not less than £31.40.

Christ, you could proberbly get a Taxi to Barton for that much, or get the train to Hessle and walk over the Bridge to Barton...

Indeed, the jointly operated EYMS/Stagecoach Humber 'Fast Cat' services and the 'Humber Flyer' bus both operate Hull-Barton, the former of those being specifically designed to connect with the trains at Barton. Can't remember the fare off hand, although you could send Jordy a PM asking him the fare as he uses it a fair bit.

The Fastcat is £3.50 single or £6.20 return, the Humber Flyer will be the same I think

There was a fare revision on 4th April, certainly before the revision it was £3.50 single Hull-Barton (it is a route I rarely need a return on). I think it is £6.60 return now, from overhearing a driver charging a passenger recently.

Both routes are booked to depart from Stand 3 at Paragon, you get the occasion unnanounced revision to Stand 1/2. They are the only services to use Stand 3.

Note that the Humber Flyer does not appear on any departure boards at Hull.

Is the cost of the bus, whether it be £31.40 or £3.50, included in the ALR?

By the way, the £31+ fare is valid by train via Hatfield and Stainforth (& Scunthorpe) as well as the bus over the bridge! Good value, eh?!! If you want to go this way your ALR would cover it anyway. Bit of a con to offer the Humber Bridge bus / train route for the same fare as via Stainforth really.

It would appear that these days, the EYMS timetable shows only those services operated by EYMS but the Stagecoach timetable shows all services.
It is debatable as to whether the £31.40 ticket is valid on the bus, I've not seen any documentation either way. Journey planners say yes but they've been known to get these things wrong (eg long distance tickets showing as valid on the Manchester Metrolink).

You could get off the train at Hessle and walk over the bridge to Barton!

If you try getting a train ticket from West Yorkshire to Barton it will route you via hull and the bus.

The interesting thing is that although standard tickets to Barton are more expensive than those to Hull, the price of the bus fare isn't actually included!

This includes the journeys operated by EYMS - though they are not marked as such.

If you want to make more than a return journey on the bus, or use local Stagecoach buses in the Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Hull areas then they offer a day ticket priced at £7.50. Obviously if you're on an ALR then bus travel won't be that high on your agenda, but it's a useful ticket to know about, especially given rail provision in Lincolnshire isn't the best.

You could get off the train at Hessle and walk over the bridge to Barton!

The walk from Hessle to the bridge is not signposted and is also not as obvious as you might think. It will be a good 15/20 mins before you are high above the railway and seemingly only yards (as the crow flies) frrom Hessle station. The walk over the bridge is interesting, but you have to have a bit of a head for heights - looking up at the soaring towers is actually more unnerving that looking down at the muddy waters of the Humber.

At the Barton side the walk to the station is straight forward, but it is worth a diversion to look at the bridge from the river bank. Allow well over an hour for the walk. I quite like the bit of the Barton branch around Barrow Haven, but the rest is pretty dull stuff. Look out for some interesting station buildings and signalboxes. And of course the restored station boards at Thornton Abbey.
