Huddersfield to Manchester

While browsing for tickets to Manchester, I wondered why they didn’t do TPE advance tickets from Huddersfield. Not the same case from Leeds, however. £6.40 advance compared to £11.75 anytime from Huddersfield with a F&F railcard (1 adult, 1 child travelling 18/08 I’m not all that familiar with how the system works, but would I be able to buy the Leeds - Manchester advance ticket without boarding at Leeds, but at Huddersfield instead?

No, as a) it’s against the rules of Advance fares and b) the ticket barriers at Huddersfield won’t allow you entry.

Consider buying Northern Advance fares to Manchester, eg on the 0712 or 0811.

Transpennine Express do offer Advance fares to Manchester Airport, changing at Manchester Piccadilly

The fact Advance fares exist much more extensively at Leeds rather thsn Huddersfield is a good example how competition benefits the passenger, since TPE have a much greater incentive to offer them at Leeds

Surely also a good example of how the franchise system fails, too. There's is no competition at Huddersfield, so passengers pay more for less, subsidising Leeds passengers. Nor could proper competition ostensibly be introduced, since the line is so busy.

RENFE, the Spanish nationalised operator, offers 'm' advance tickets for less.

If that was the case TPE would be offering as many Advances at Huddersfield as at Leeds.

Surely that's because the TPE trains are busy already? So there is no point trying to compete with bus or coach.
