HST's in weird or strange places

That must have looked a trifle odd at Manchester Airport when you're used to MUs and nothing else!

Anyone ever considered colouring in a route coverage map to indicate where HSTs have been to in the past? There can't be much more left for the class to do now really, bar re-opened routes, tiny branch lines and obscure freight lines!

I was going to mention the Hereford to Paddingtons starting at Abergavenny for a timetable period or two. I had the delightful pleasure of getting 43002 from Abergavenny on its last Valenta day, nothing but thrash on that and thoroughly enjoyable.

I have photos of Pembroke Dock HSTs somewhere from the RailUK meet that was held in 2005, I'm sure Dennis, Jim or a number of other members may have photos somewhere too. Photos I have of HSTs at Abergavenny on 3rd January 2008, for some reason the photos are not online. Again, I shall get on with uploading these now!

Video footage of 43002 at Abergavenny and on the 0511 to London Paddington is about somewhere, I shall see if I can find it and get Movie Maker to actually work properly.

Still often have empty stocks running up from Newport to Abergavenny. 3P26 I think it is or at least used to be, might be 3P21 now. But that runs up from Bristol up the curve onto Abergavenny. Occasionally turns around at Newport.

Anyone remember the first Virgin HST to be out-shopped in Virgin livery? It made its debut over the Settle - Carlisle line, and subsequently appeared in one or two railway mags. Apparently there was very little notice given.

I have seen (online listings):

- HST to Holyhead (nothing unusual) on a tour fro St Pancras via Llandudno branch.
- For line sections, a BR tour running between Newport and Hereford in service (unusual?)
- Cambridge - Edinburgh railtour
- HST from Norwich - Minehead via Stratford
- HST to Tenby from Norwich via Ely, Hitchin, Kings Cross incline
- Southmister, Southend Victoria and Wickford in 1997
- Kings Cross - Dundee tour in 2000 via the Bedlington freight line after Newcastle to Morpeth
- HST tour to Lowestoft 1990
- 1988 over the Blackburn - Hellafield passenger/freight lines, also Low Fell freight curve used
- 1988 again with a HST tour to Blackpool from St Pancras via Wolvo, Wrexham, Chester Curve, returning via Bolton, Man Vic, Edale, Chesterfield etc to SP
- 1989 HST tour saw it use the Greenford line to join Chiltern line and ran via Princes Risborough, Banbury to Stratford-upon-Avon (ran to Norwich via Tyseley, Water Orton, March etc.
- Matlock was the terminus for the 1994 HST tour from St Pancras
- 1997 saw a HST to Yeovil Junction via Slough, Castle Cary..nothing unusual, but ran back via Gillingham, Salisbury, Andover, Basi, Reading, Slough
- 1995 saw a railtour run to Aberystwyth
- In 1990, a tour ran from Eutson to Blackpool North via Cleethorpes, Grimsby and Copy Pit
- One was listed to Heysham Port and Morecambe (no confirmation if it ran though)

Correct, empties from the Marsh still run up to Hereford for the 0543 and 0643 Hereford to London Paddingtons. To this day I am unsure why FGW started the services at Abergavenny at all, but I'm sure glad it was doable and with my machine on 3rd January 2008! Going up Llanvihangel has never been quite so enjoyable before or after that day

I know they run as class 3s still (in this case, priority ECS). I envy the drivers who get to take the ECS movements to Hereford, would love to get Maindee East Junction to Abergavenny scratched in on a HST!

EDIT: Forgot to mention I'm getting photos from the tour to Minehead of 10th June 2008 uploaded this morning, hopefully I'll find my photos from 3rd January 2008 too for the shot of HSTs at Abergavenny to add to this thread!

Will start on that this week, using info on here and Six Bells.

Though I will use a different colour if a HST was 'planned' on a tour but no-one knows if it ran to the destination (unless its done the line on another tour already I won't bother)

You will find quite often they may arrive earlier or later, depends whether the one has to follow the first up manchester - although NR agreements state that the manchester should be held at NWP to allow for the class 3 to make its way to HFD

Remember seeing one charging east through Brandon station on the Ely/Norwich line in the mid eighties (1985, 1986... I was aged 4 or 5). One of my first experiences of the train; my dad was with me and we were waiting for my mum on a local from Cambridge. He took me up to the rather wobbly looking footbridge to wait, and just when I thought my mum was coming home an HST appeared out of nowhere and roared past a few inches below us. Apparently I was still screaming when my mum got in ten minutes later.

Must have been a holidaymaker towards Great Yarmouth or Lowestoft, but no idea where from.

(And don't worry, I've learnt to love 'em now : )

HSTs were a regular occurence in Norfolk during the 80's IIRC

Plymouth- Glasgow central is currently serviced by HST's. They arrive (or are due rather) at 2235, usually Platform 1 or 2.

I remember seeing a photograph of a NXEC HST in Glasgow Central somewhere on the net, after it ran from Kings Cross vice the usual 91+MK4 set, due to engineering work somewhere along the route.

I don't know what route it took or anything like that, but i'm sure someone else can add more details.

In the latter days of InterCity HSTs ran to Glasgow Central on services like The Cornish Scot (Penzance), The Devon Scot (Plymouth) and The Dorset Scot (Bournemouth). Some services from the south reversed at Glasgow and went on to Edinburgh via Carstairs. The nose cone had its effect on these services, some of them speeding up by over an hour compared to the loco-hauled services they replaced.

I travelled on one around 1996 when the Voyager concept was in operation. Not a Class 220/1, but an at-seat service for full-fare standard class ticket holders. This was in the seated section of the buffet car and could be identified by blue Voyager anti-macassars. I travelled from Preston to Plymouth and had a restaurant-style meal served at-seat. As I recall the Voyager service was available on the longer-distance ICXC services.

Well, it's a different route, but the Monday - Friday 1221 Plymouth - Glasgow (arr. 2235) is a currently an HST, although I doubt XC are keen on naming any of their trains.
