“Top men” sounds like a descriptor for a group of football “enthusiasts” and not something I’ve heard in a rail context :s
It is a colloquialism for someone who is among the group of individuals who have had the most mileage off a class of engines, or the largest distinct number of locomotives from a class.

I'm not sure how the poster using the phrase has identified that there weren't any "top men" on the train, other than perhaps identifying that the "top men" for HST haulage are not those who are "top men" for other classes.

I'm a bit puzzled why you would frown upon Top Men on a railtour?
For many reasons ranging from an inability to use soap, wash clothes, use toothpaste or understand that declaring you have "had 357 for ten thou on the main line" is dullardy of the highest order.

I despite the insider language, the little jokes and nicknames for trains and the utterly banal discussion of clag, thrash, tonez and which type of train is best.

Any chance of a conversation on a topic other than trains? Ever?

The equivalent of attending a CAMRA meeting and complaining that everyone is talking about real ale!

Our village pub is the venue for the local CAMRA meeting and as far as I can determine they mostly talk about classic cars, cricket and what a fine chap Nigel Farage is.
