Forgive my ignorance but do power cars have a gearbox? I thought it was engine -> alternator -> traction motors?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Unless the gearbox is between the engine and the alternator of course?

There is gearing from the traction motors to the wheels, not sure if this is variable though.

That must have gone with a bang when it went! Would it have caused any secondary damage when it failed?

This accident in 1979 was caused by the failure of the gearbox

http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/eventsummary.php?eventID=1073

The wheelset siezed and the pinion gear on the traction motor ground down the main gear attached to the drivewheels so the motor spun but the wheels didnt turn. When the train hit the crossover at northallerton the wheelset which had now had a groove dug in to it in the shape of the railhead and tried to follow the crossover point work at 70mph. no major injures fortunately

DOT Northallerton Derailment Accident Report said:
5. To reduce size, mass, and cost a traction motor is used which runs at a speed considerably higher than that of the axle that it drives. A speed reduction gearhox is used between the motor armature shaft and the axle. To reduce the unsprung mass on the axles and hence the amount of track damage, the two traction motors are mounted on the bogie frame and thus fully sprung by the primary suspension. Each gearbox is mounted on the axle by two taper roller bearings and the pinion is carried on its own shaft in the upper half of the gearbox by two additional taper roller bearings. The gear wheel is mounted directly on the axle. The drive from the motor armature is to a short cardan shaft through a flexible coupling. The cardan shaft passes through the hollow centre of the pinion shaft and is connected to it at the far end by a second flexible coupling. A torque reaction link with bonded rubber bushes couples the gearhox to the bogie frame. The gearhox is overall about 110Ox600x3M) mm.

Has anyone else seen the irony in the failed powercars name?

Reminds me a little bit of IC / NSE era Laira / OOC - Depots renown for churning the best of the fleet on the Western, the less so on the South Western.
