Simple question. Did HST's on the East coast main line ever have simple 2x2 table seats throughout in the the same way as mk2 stock did? I mean in standard (2nd) class of course.

No. All HST second class coaches - and loco-hauled Mk3s for the West Coast - were originally built with a 72-seat layout, as shown on this diagram, labelled TS original

Ah great thanks for that. I vividly remember travelling from Newcastle to Peterborough around '78 ish as an infant in stock that was entirely table seat, which would suggest to me I was on a loco hauled train.?

Could well have been loco-hauled, perhaps a late-build Mk2f, as there were a good few of these in use on ECML services in the mid-1970s that were fitted with a very similar interior to the first HSTs, including InterCity 70 seats.

Yes, in 1978 there were still quite a few loco-hauled workings of the ECML which would have been late Mk2 stock. Also, as shown in the linked diagram, there were only eight face-to-back seats in the original Mk3 layout, grouped round the central partition, and they weren't very noticeable. So it may have been quite easy to come away with the impression that all seats were around tables.
