Just out of curiousity what's actually left in them now, bike hooks and such or is all that gone?

Howcome they aren't used anymore?

FGW power cars are all fitted with a relatively new 3 Cycle Hanging rack, they still have the emergency coupling cupboard ,an ATP control module, Inergen Fire bottle rack, an MTU engine electrical interface control.....they are still used but only occassionally for cycles and luggage especially during the summer months

They can be used. But think only FGW are the ones that do use the van on powercars.


EC let people use the TGS van, but its been a while since I saw a PC Van used. EMT no real need I think. Cross Country might do when they go to Newquay in the summer to get all the surf boards in.

Used the EMT set on EC and found no such refinements of bike racks or the like in the power car, fortunately was able to lock on the brake on my bike so that it didn't move about, much better on the cls 91's

EMT just have an empty space in the back of the power car.

The powercar luggage space on EMT is available for use but I certainly haven't ever seen a need for it. It's rare to even store things in the TGS to be honest. The last thing I put in there was a mobility scooter that was too large to put in the train.

XC don't take surf boards, or at least that was what I overheard an FGW TM advise some surfers in the summer, to make sure they were on an FGW train back. Just had a thought, surfboards on a voyager

EMT vans are now back in use following door replacement programme. Were used extensively on this Summer's Derby to Skegness service - both vans used in both directions.

The FGW bike hanging system was put in place during the various experiments around the introduction of SDO operation for short platforms, as a means for transporting bikes from short platforms where coach A/TGS would not be platformed. It didn't last long, and pretty soon after it was introduced, we got told that the train always had to be platformed with the TGS on the platform (with a few exceptions where it was not possible, such as Kemble). In those cases, we can put the bike in a vestibule to the next station, where it can be moved to the TGS.

We do use the power car (usually rear) on occasions for bikes, usually only when the bike is going all the way from wherever the train is starting from to the terminus as it won't delay the train to get it on or off. Personally, I never use the hooks, they are too messy, and just lie the bikes on the floor, on the principle they can't fall any further.

I have used them for large amounts of luggage if the passengers, usually parties, are organised to be waiting on the right part of the platform with it all.

I believe that FGW are the only TOC to take surfboards, and then only on HST's, not local units. We are supposed to charge £5, but I have never been able to figure out how to do it.

GC use them for bikes and large items of luggage. No racks but plenty of room. Sometimes used for storing rubbish etc and the usual emergency equipment on hand plus emergency bottled water.

I remember a year or two ago loading a power car van at Thirsk with a school group's bags etc, it was 4 feet deep from one side to the other, with a small passage to allow access to the engine room!!
