Hi Folks,

I'm planning a long weekend to Edinburgh from Kings Cross in July. Is there any way to find out which trains are HST's or 225's. Departing Kings Cross on a thursday about 11am and returning from Edinburgh on sunday about 10am.

Thanks for any info.

Regards,

Adam

I thought the timetables (not the full timetable, but the ones showing only one direction and either weekday or Sat or Sun) had something on them, but they no longer seem to.

When you actually book them you'll be able to see from the seat-chooser what coaches are/aren't there - or that on a 225 the 1st-class seating has the single seat on one side for half of the carriage and the other side for the other half.

Any that go beyond Edinburgh to Inverness or Aberdeen are HSTs.

From memory, I think that:
  • any to/from Glasgow are 225s
  • the 2pm northbound weekday service is a 225
  • all the x:00pm northbound weekday services after 2pm (i.e. the faster services) are HSTs

Sure there's a definitive list somewhere though.

Realtimetrains will show booked traction, though is subject to swaps. As per above, anything to or from Aberdeen or Inverness has to be HST

You can gain a rough idea from here, but I've found the only way to get a better idea is to check East Coast's seating diagrams on their website. The difference is that on a 125 (HST) the buffet coach has 1st class Quiet coach, but on the 225 (Electra, or Flying Scotsman as Eats Toast like to call them) sets the buffet coach has standard class seats that aren't reservable.

Both of the services you've requested are on 225 diagrams. The 11.03 to Leeds on a weekday however is an HST (albeit not direct or as fast)

The 1000, 1400 and 1600 out of Kings Cross are HSTs as they go to Aberdeen.
The 1200 is a HST as it goes to Inverness.
