I noticed that on Monday the 1215 Penzance to Paddington was an HST to Plymouth , worked a Paddington service from Plymouth due to over running works at Paddington

Makes sense as those 43s still work Penzance to Plymouth regularly. The IET(802022) then working the leg from Plymouth to Pad.

Yes, the HST was stepped up to work the Plymouth - Penzance - Plymouth part of the London diagram, with 150265 working the HST's intended working. Clearly an 802 took over East of Plymouth.

Passengers aboard the 1215 were informed on boarding that there would be a change of trains in Plymouth.

I don't think they'd be able to do linespeed on the GWML in to Paddington. I seem to recall something about the brake force not being significant enough with only having four coaches for 125 running.
