Including the prototype, there have been 24 liveries in total. I'm including the Hornby & Cotswold Rail liveries, carried by 43087 & 43070 respectively, in that total number.
Are you also including the recent/current FGW advertising liveries? There are two; Hewlett Packard white and the current Singapore Airlines scheme. There was also the HRH Jubilee livery.
I guess it depends on whether you consider a variation of a livery to be a new livery or not. Some would count "Virgin Trains" and "unbranded Virgin trains" as two, but then claim the Virgin Trains livery with "Virgin Cross Country" logos is the same as "Virgin Trains", others will disagree.....
If you include variations there are more than 24, I started to lose count at 32.
For those of us who aren't sure which ones these are, shall we make a proper list, that way we might get a definite answer. Just the Power Cars (otherwise we'd get a very long list of power car and coach combos that have been seen once) and not counting unbranded versions. Here are the ones I can think of (in no particular order):
1) Blue & Grey with yellow fronts
2) Intercity Swallow
3) Midland Mainline Tangerine and Green
4) Midland Mainline Blue and Silver
5) East Midland Trains
6) First Great Western Green and Gold
7) First Great Western Barbie (white fronts)
8) First Great Western Barbie (purple fronts)
9) First Great Western Blue
10) GNER
11) National Express East Coast
12) East Coast
13) Cross Country
14) Hornby Livery
15) Cotswold Rail Livery
16) Virgin
17) Virgin XC
18) Flying Banana (NMT)
19) Grand Central (with stripe)
Updates below
20) Intercity Executive
21) Great Western Merlin
22) Intercity red/grey cab (Holyhead)
23) Original Blue/Grey/Black/Yellow
24) Grand Central (without stripe)
25) 43038
26) GNER/NXEC Hybrid
27) First Great Western Jubilee
28) First Great Western Dynamic Lines (on power car)
29) First Great Western / Angel
30) GNER London 2012
31) GNER White Lettering
32) DVT Executive
33) DVT Swallow
34) 43006 (DVT on standard Power Car)
35) Intercity Swallow (Claret Stripe)
There was also the Great Western Merlin livery. --- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Would this count? It was a variation on InterCity Swallow, designating Power Cars dedicated to London to Holyhead services.
Original Blue/Grey/yellow/Black (002/004/006 only).
Grand Central have had two liveries, one with an orange stripe, one without.
DVT version of 'executive'
DVT version of 'Swallow'
The slightly odd 'swallow' variation of 43038 (white cab roof/full yellow end)
GNER/NXEC cross-over (it wasn't just de-branding)
FGW 'Jubilee'
FGW dynamic lines (with the lines)
FGW plain blue/'Angel' logo
Two FGW advertising liveries already mentioned
GNER 'London 2012' (back the bid/host city) variation
I think livery has to be anything that involves paint or large areas of vinyl which significantly change the appearance. If you count variations you could be here forever and you could argue a slightly misplaced logo could be a variation, where does it end?? There will always be grey areas.
I think the variations should be discussed though. Some I didn't know about already. Just looked up 43038 with its white roof, very odd look that was! As is the Holyhead swallow posted above.
The HST 'DVT' power cars had buffers fitted and therefore had very little lower fairing to paint yellow, so the yellow 'warning panel' was applied to the whole front of the cab instead.
Don't forget the four InterCity Great Western power cars that gained claret stripes in place of red on their Swallow livery. This was when Chris Green changed the IC house colour to claret and wanted it used on the livery. However, the claret made the whole livery look dull, so the red stripe remained though with the return to cast nameplates these had a claret background.
