It was a fairly nutty day all round Thursday 8th. An out and back KX-Retford journey saw my return 16.18 'Hull Train' from Retford caped with replacement traction in the form of a battered Doncaster based minicab to Peterbro (provided by Hull Trains as VTEC weren't honouring HT only tickets) then GN stopper to the blocks.

But for the northbound journey - a 17 min late departure the 11.08 KX-York - traction was provided by a borrowed East Mids HST which to my surprise, arrived with a Rail Ops Group headboard on the southern end (power car 43089) which was then removed at the buffers. Headboards on ECS moves? Can somebody tell me why?

ROG always put a headboard on things that they are operating as far as I can tell, and they'll have been doing that particular ECS move (Cricklewood - Kings Cross via Harringay Jn) if it was one of the recently arranged leases where an HST that was otherwise going to be sat in sidings between the peaks is put to use on the ECML before heading back to the MML in time for the evening rush. Neither any EMT or VTEC drivers will have had the relevant route knowledge for it.

Thanks for the reply Domh245- am sure you're right on all accounts. And the 11.08 to York seems like an easy out and back turn for a set in between rush hour duties. I find it remarkable that someone's going to the effort of affixing headboards for short distance ECS/positioning moves in 2018!
Top marks on the PR side.

Fair question. I, of course, meant ROG. Honestly, I must have fast-growing enthusiast group Railfans on Pies on my mind.
