Whats the future for the Azuma trains after the new HS2 trains launch and Transpenine go on the East coast line? Surely they will lose passengers? And the Azumos will be quite new even come 2026. Or will HS2 use the West coast line and replace Virgin trains?

A few points needed to be made here:

  • Azuma's ARE NOT being replaced by HS2 stock. HS2 will not affect East Coast services until 2033 at the earliest
  • Transpennine are only using the Northern section and extending Liverpool-Newcastle services to Edinburgh (not replacing any east coast services)
  • Some services will be transferred to HS2 (namely Liverpool, Manchester and Scotland (Glasgow and Edinburgh services)) and the free capacity will be used by other services. Some services will still run to these destinations post-HS2 but with more stops to provide connectivity.

I thought they are doing Edinburgh to London with Transpenine?

And what services will HS2 replace East coast or west coast?

And what services will HS2 replace East coast or west coast?

It'll replace the fastest, non-stop services on both lines.

HS2 phase 1/2a (scheduled for completion in 2026) will mean most existing Virgin services from Euston will run as HS2 trains instead. That frees up capacity on the WCML. We don't yet know exactly what will be timetabled to fill that capacity, but we can reasonably expect to see those services replaced with more commuter trains, and also trains between London and the NorthWest that stop at more places - thereby giving more links from Watford/Milton Keynes/Rugby etc. to Liverpool/Manchester/Preston/etc. (Which will presumably be what the Pendolinos will be used for).

HS2 phase 2 (hopefully complete 2033) will do exactly the same thing for the ECML (and also to a lesser extent the MML). So for example, London-Leeds and London-Newcastle-Edinburgh will run via HS2, speeding up those journeys. And the spare capacity that is created on the ECML will most likely get used to provide more long-distance stopping services. So the Azumas will continue to run, but they'll stop at more places, and essentially be providing better links between Stevenage/Peterborough/etc. and the NorthEast. Possibly there'll also be more commuter services to Kings Cross. I also wouldn't be surprised if the opportunity is taken to run services like Grimsby-Lincoln-London, which I believe are not currently possible because of no capacity on the ECML.

HS2 to Scotland is 2x200m trains splitting at Carstairs with a unit each to Edinburgh and Glasgow, nothing via Newcastle which is the most Northerly via ECML destination.

Hence no change with phase1 and minimal change phase 2b between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

no idea what the question here is.

that is hardly a transpennie route! TPE will be going to Edinburgh but only north from York.

I didn't know TPE will be going to Edinburgh from York. They go Manchester to Edinburgh now but thats on the WCML via Carlisle. On the ECML I thought they terminated at Newcastle?
