The main potential growth areas for cross-channel HS trains appear to be London-Amsterdam, and London-Cologne, both of which would benefit from infrastructure enhancements to bypass Brussels and its commuter trains and reduce journey times.

But that's talking about running from to London (the capital of one country) to Amsterdam (the biggest city in another, densely populated country) or to Cologne which is the biggest city in another densely populated region and serves as a gateway to the rest of Germany.

And these markets will only be opened by large-scale infrastructure improvements.

Birmingham-Lille doesn't have the same potential.
