What was up with SET High Speed today? Tonight was near-chaos, lots of passengers waiting but no trains boarding, the 18.25 hadn't left by 18.40. I noted some late arrivals this morning too.

Also realised how poor facilities are that side of the station, nowhere warm or comfortable to sit at platform level while you wait for trains.

And, as usual, the departure boards completely useless and blank much of the time. They've had months to sort them out!

Broken down train near Stratford according to NRES.

SET website stated an operational error, there are still major delays now, one train was 48 minutes late!

Hopefully, these are all mere teething problems and will be ironed out PDQ!

They did have problems with the screens showing 'Boarding' for most of the day - has this not been fixed yet?!

Surely that was part of the point of running a preview service!

They have periodically been doing that for the last 6 months. Tonight they were just blank. I still think its confusing to have the boards split by operator at St P, esp as there is no signage to tell you this, you just have to work it out. I can't think of other stations where this happens.

Kings Cross does, but it seems a bit more clear there as you can see both local and IC departures at the same time. At St Pancras you can't. I guess it has always been that way at Kings Cross although in the past it did clearly label IC and NSE (again my still do so don't pay enough attention) They do have summary boards that show all trains, do they have them at St Pancras so you can see all trains in order of when they depart. I know they have summary boards but I can't remember now if they scroll between operators.

I don't think its confusing as there are separate like the fact that the platforms are all seperate. Take your point about no signage as that could be rather helpful even if its just a simple logo around the screens.

King's Cross has a smaller summary board that is in time order - showing all TOCs in one list. It's also the one used around the station.

The main signs are East Coast/Hull Trains/Grand Central on one side and FCC on the other.

At St Pancras, the signs are about a mile long and in no particular order (okay there IS an order but only if you know about TOCs and where each one operates - just as everyone is bound to do having arrived from Europe!). There's no summary board and unless you're standing miles away (and then your view is partially blocked), you have to actually walk to see one board from another!

When you go through to FCC, there are two signs but these are showing ALL FCC services in time order - not northbound or southbound (which would be considerably more useful for regular travellers and newbies alike).

Upstairs, you can view the signs from a bit more of a distance with ease and with so few platforms, I guess this is nice and easy. Ditto when you're downstairs on the FCC platform.

The signs in general at St Pancras are a mess, only beaten by the ridiculous sign positions and design at Heathrow T5. Already checked in and ready to fly? Coming up from Heathrow Express? Now go find departures without walking left or right first and looking back on yourself.

People presumably get paid to put up signs - but what a pathetic job they do!

Some signs have changed and improved during the time the station has been opened, and it's good to see that both FCC and EMT is now shown as 'UK Rail Tickets' even if it begs the question why there are two separate lots of windows. Again, Joe Public doesn't care who operates the windows. It now means having to choose the queue wisely in the first place!

I agree about the lack of facilities at St. P on the Southeastern level, same could be said for the East Midlands platforms. I think the idea is that you go and shop on the lower level until your train is due (The way the station was designed seems to be shooping centre first, rail station second, although I have to admit its mostly a very nice shopping centre...)

That's not much use on nights like tonight when you need to be at platform level to be part of the stampede when the train is announced! Also the SET part of the station feels like it is much more out on a limb than the EMT part for some reason.

This train has been delayed at London Blackfriars and is now 41 minutes late. This is due to earlier signalling problems.

20.21 from Margate 1 hour 29 late
21.51 from Dover 34 mins late
22.06 from Faversham Cancelled

Not a good second day of operations! Does anyone know yet what the failed train was?

I've not used the South Eastern side yet, Can you get to these platforms directly through the Barlow trainshed or do you have to go through the undercroft?

Do you get the HS1 supplement back once the train has taken longer than it would on the normal route? ;)

Presumably got trapped in a neutral section

Indeed, pantograph stuck in a neutral section.

(For those who don't know, thats part of the overhead wires with no electricity running through it, which separates two sections of wire which do have electricity).

Got to Stratford at 6.10 and finally got a Dover train at 7.10, although very helpfully they refused to let it stop at Ebbsfleet to help out the people who needed to get there. As usual with South Eastern the station staff were being given no information by control/management, and left to wing it. The poor lady's best advice was to go back to Charing Cross, which would be another trip of 45 mintes followed by a 2 hour journey now all trains are all station stoppers -even assuming there was no wait for an onward train. To add insult to injury, all this time there was a StP bound train which had been stopped in the adjacent platform. I'm sure one of you learned railwaymen will be able to tell me why when it obviously wasn't going into StP it couldn't have been re-routed to go back "down"? Also there being no facility to buy a cup of tea on the coldest day of the year was a bit galling!

Having just had another trip around no you can't. You can walk though the shed and past the bar to get to the EMT platforms (as many of us do). However the Eurostars make it impossible to get between that side of the station and the South Eastern side (I guess they could have put a bridge up but whats the point it would take just as long going over as it does under.)

On thing that did hit me is how unintergrated South Eastern is to the station. Its platforms are totally separate. But it is not mentioned on any of the summary departure boards. (I noticed this during the preview). If someone is arriving from Euston road they will see some summary TV screens as they walk down the platform. The show in this order Eurostar, EMT & FCC next few departures, no mention of South Eastern. Can't see any South Eastern arrival boards. For HS1 supposed to be South Easterns flagship service, it certainly seems to be a bit bolted on the side at the moment. Some really does need to improve the passenger information at that station, make it more like Kings Cross is at the moment!

St Pancras still haven't put up signs to say that you now have another tube station entrance.

Okay, they HAVE put up poster boards but this isn't what you're looking for - or able to see when there are lots of people.

You can also get to the SET platforms via the subway to the tube station (lifts I believe) and there are signs down there - and more ticket machines (four I think).

St Pancras is a very disjointed station and I only know it inside and out because of the time I've spent there (from early testing before Eurostar began) to late nights waiting for a train and wandering all over - right out to the coach station and walking around the whole outside of the building. And, yes, this has attracted the attention of security on one occasion!

There are some sheltered coach bays within the northern half of the station.

Hiding in your shadow
I've used it before it got refurbished and I've got to say, I feel there are many flaws. I've ranted about this previously.

Putting Eurostar arrivals onto the main concourse is the most idiotic thing I can think to do. When you're hurrying for a train the last thing you want is an old French woman rambling on, with 2 large wheeled suitcases blocking up the concourse.

As previously mentioned, the SET platforms feel like an add on.
If anything, the EMT platforms feel like an afterthought too. At peak times the overcrowding is insane. More platforms would probably been a nice addition..

The Eurostar platforms cut straight through the historic train shed, and personally ruins it for me. They fragment it. Absolute farce for me I'm afraid.

The whole thing seems very Eurostar orientated. Everything else is put after the Eurostar service. The lower concourse is basically an Airport shopping mall, and I guess was designed to give the Airport feel. It's not a bloody Airport...

I just can't help but feel that UK passengers at St Pancras are second to Continental ones.

Coach station??

Exactly!!

Okay, maybe coach station conjured up an image of Victoria Coach Station - which isn't quite what it is. In fact, I suspect that for the time being the coaches are just ones pre-booked for groups, not a turn up and go service to venture on to Birmingham, Liverpool or whatever.

I am not sure if that could ever become part of the plan in the future though? The problem with St Pancras is that once you go beyond the wonderful main building, everything else looks like it was built without ANY ability to expand in the future.

The new northern ticket hall has presumably helped reduce the queues at the other ticket halls, but the station(s) are still going to struggle to cope with the sheer numbers of people potentially arriving at both King's Cross and St Pancras at the exact same time.

The designers/owners definitely wanted to create an airport feel. As the champagne bar was planned early on, I guess the positioning of Eurostar was there to really highlight the fact that this a European gateway. To be fair, it does still ignite a feeling of passion for many people - and hides the wonderful Betjeman Arms in the far corner so it doesn't get filled up with travellers and their huge suitcases!!!

There are strict rules on who is allowed to take a lease there, so there won't be a McDonald's or BK there anytime soon. Instead, we have - admittedly nice - places serving expensive food and drink (and of course, anyone coming from Paris wants lots of French places at St Pancras!) and nothing there for grabbing something cheap. Boots perhaps?

The signs are poor (fixed and CIS), the station is freezing and when the snow started last night it was coming through all the gaps and falling down onto the shops. Adding to the romance? Perhaps - but I'm not convinced. You surely want to feel safe and warm and NOT part of the outside in such conditions.

Do I still love the station? Yes, I probably do despite its flaws - but I cannot get so attached to it that I can ignore those major issues that need to be addressed.

StP already has a Boots branch, albeit in the 'Circle'. And 4 WHSmith branches (yes, 4!) including one in the Eurostar departure lounge.
