Hi all,

I have been pondering recently about how the high speed line between Ashford and St Pancras is maintained compared to NR track. For example, I know pretty much how track is maintained on NR. With visual inspections, possessions and TSR's etc. How does it work on high speed lines? I'd imagine due to the speed you'd be unable to have any gangs working in live traffic like on NR track. Do they block the line at night to maintain it or something? how do TSR's work with TVM signalling etc?

Thanks

I have read that HS2 is intended to Do the maintainance overnight, so presume HS1 is the same.

Doesn't the TGV Iris, another yellow train, come over every few months?

All HS1 maintenance is done overnight. There has to be one line open from the Tunnel to St Pancras, but the route can weave from one line to another using the bi-di.

The maintenance required is very different to the 'classique' lines, e.g. no foot patrolling required for plain line. However it does make it a rather expensive piece of route to maintain.

Reballasting (of the first phase) is pegged for approx 2018-2020, using similar techniques to that on the LGVs in France, i.e. one line closed for 10h overnight, both for 6h, using an HOBC to do about half a mile a night.
