HowtoBecome...Trainee Train Driver Course

Has anyone on here completed this course? Cost is about £200 for the day. Is it worth the money? Will it help get you through the process?

Please no. Pretty much all their train driver material is from this very forum to begin with, tells you all you need to know. It's not necessary in the slightest. I'm on mobile phone now, so can't post a proper response, but seriously I wouldn't even bother with how2become. Assessment advice is found on this forum, interview help and preparation too. You've got everything here.

OP where are you at in your application process? What do you think you need help with? Perhaps we can help...

Has anyone from 'How2Become' ever been a driver or sat the assessment process and passed? Or assessed using this process for a TOC/OPC?

If the answer is no - why would you take their advice? Because they have a fancy website, maybe?

I'd say its a lazy way to research the job but its worse than that IMO.

I would strongly suggest that you do not spend money on this. You either "have it" or you don't for driving.

I read the How2Become a train driver book. It starts off by giving you the authors credentials. He was an inspector in the fire brigade and has blah blah blah experience with interviews.

As good as he is at writing books, I wouldn't want to take any advise off someone about a subject they have never excelled in!

I'm a lorry driver and I vary rarely listen to how the taxi driver home from the pub thinks people should drive!! Just sayin'

Avoid. You do not need this. The pre-assessment pack provided by the relevant TOC is sufficient practice for the assessments. There is book you can buy on Amazon to practice the Group Bourdon test if you so wish, but other than that I would just use what you are sent.

Have to agree with what everyone here have said, defo dont waste your money......use this forum, do alot of research & build up your own little information booklets.......that worked 4me

There are a great many folk out there willing to alleviate people of currency, unfortunately the more 'desperate' folk get the more likely they are to part with their dwindling funds to pursue their ambitions, and all too often with little to nothing in return.
I went through all this years ago when I was looking to become self employed and there were many folk willing to offer basic training courses and franchises to lighten folks of redundancy payments, it was highlighted on watchdog or something that these types would target areas where there was a big factory closure with mass redundancies as those folks would be willing to chuck their money at it to try to get ahead of everyone else.
I became self employed without much outlay but a bloke around the corner laid out £15k to do the same job, he was tied into a franchise agreement where all calls from his adverts went through the franchise ... they then subbed it out & hardly any went to him, he had a van rental that went also through them so they were making some kind of 'admin fee' out of that as well.
Basically they took his 15k then for about 3 years had an income from him every month without them having any kind of outlay at all, he reckons they were making way more out of it per month than he was.


That said there are others that offer valuable information and give folk that bit of confidence that they need, and if someone was to succeed after a couple of hundred quid outlay then they'll view it as money well spent, although that'll be a very small percentage in the case of becoming a driver.
