How to research depots?

One more question, how do I find the locations of the depots for my local TOCs?

I gather there needs to be a depot fairly close to my house to be in with a shout of progressing.

Google, Wikipedia, going up to drivers or guards at stations and asking, tweeting the toc in question. There are many methods. You'll find Google just sends you back here along with a list those routes drivers/guards sign

Out of interest, when they say you must be within 1 hour of a depot, I presume that is by car. As surely on early starts and late finishes there will be no other way to get between the depot and your house.

Any method. Train, walking, bus, car. From your front door to booking on.

I cycle the 20 minutes to my depot each day, so it doesn't have to be by car.

You'd be surprised. Many depots, especially London terminals, are easy by train for getting in for earlier at 5 and home again from 0030 finishes. It all depends on the specific location.

Take the 1hour rule with a pinch of salt. Hundreds of drivers have got jobs as trainees at depots over an hour away, it's far from set in stone. Just need to make sure you can get there in a reasonable time.

Thanks for all your help. I have researched the closest depots and the companies that operate through them. Now its just a case of waiting for jobs to get posted and making sure I spend a lot of time on my application.

LOTS of drivers cycle, seems to be more common then the car. Prob do it to make up for all the fast food and discounted coffees! Also tocs usually have an affiliation with a cycling store so you can get a bike for cheap. I personally use the train unless I'm working very early or until very late.
