How to know when trains are coming

Probably a silly question this. I am knew to rail photography and would like to get some shots locally of trains. The normal run of the mill passenger stuff is easy as it is coming and going all the time. But I know for example that EWS freight trains run through Poole but obviously infrequently. How would i find out when such a train is likely to be passing through so that I can go to a location and hopefully get some pics?

somewhere there will be a timetable for it, I don't know where because to be honest I don't care about the timetables

Unless you know someone on the railway that has access to TRUST, your best bet is to use the Freightmaster website...however it is quite expensive.

I agree, join the numerous groups at Yahoo, then follow posts to determine times

a way I used to work out the passage of freight was to check the time it passes, then after a while and at that time, go to the station, and wait for that train, it worked when I did it, but the train I was after was going the wrong way, I was after a southbound freight, and a northbound one turned up

Thanks for all the suggestions. The Yahoo groups are good and have joined the Wessex one today. Also took pot luck and went to Hamworthy station nearby. It carries a Freightliner sand train on the mainline on a regular basis and also having spoken to the signalman today have learnt of a DBS train of rock that comes through at 1PM on a Wednesday. Hope to get back there tomorrow for some photos.

if your at a station you cold ask the staff at the desk if they have any info, then just wait for "Stand well back from the platform edge, the next train at platform x does not stop here stand behind the yellow line"
