Why not catch a train from Leeds to Manchester Victoria, then get the Metrolink tram to Bury Interchange? At least it's by rail all the way! Takes about 10 minutes to walk from Bury Interchange to Bury Bolton Street.

Trams are currently going through Manchester Victoria without stopping while the Metrolink station is being rebuilt. The nearest Metrolink station at which trams to Bury stop is Shudehill (5 minutes' walk from Victoria - follow the tram tracks).

The nearest station is Castleton, just after Rochdale but I've no idea on onward bus connections to Heywood or Bury or how good the walking route/distance is but in pleasant weather such as today, I'd imagine it would be a nice walk.

We stayed in Castleton when we visited the line in 2010. We had to walk tot he Rochdale end of the village, where there is a junction and the road to Heywood is on the left. Just down the road from the junction was a bus stop which had a frequent (especially for a Sunday) service to Heywood and Bury. I can't remember the number now, though, and it's probably different anyway!

It didn't seem that far to Heywood, so I'm sure it would be walkable, but we went to Bury anyway.
