If you forget to look at Journey Check the night before, and it turns out on the day that your booked train is cancelled, how do you know whether it was P-coded? Is it worth just claiming anyway and see what they say? This is Avanti, the passenger concerned is having to take the next one an hour later which unsurprisingly is extremely busy.

In the case of Avanti, it almost certainly wasn't P-coded. Last month, their Punctuality and Performance page had a line at the bottom saying that the one train that was P-coded was done so by mistake and that they do not P-code any of their trains. This month it just says:
All trains shown in the ‘Services Removed from the Plan’ section were removed from the plan for 24th April by Network Rail, following an issue affecting the overhead line at Kings Langley which limited the amount of trains that could travel through the area.

Obviously things are cancelled the day before but I can't say I've been affected by that (yet) so can't comment on whether it would pass whatever checks they do. Also can't really shed any light on other TOCs who are a fair bit more P-coding friendly than Avanti.

P-coding is irrelevant to Delay Repay.
Oh is it? I thought it was their get-out if they claim to have cancelled it the night before.

In the case in point it was due to a cancellation that the next train had to be taken, resulting in arrival at destination an hour later than had they travelled on their booked train, hence the delay repay claim.

Being cancelled the day before and being P-coded are not necessarily the same thing. There is at least one website that will tell you when a train was cancelled, but if you are not sure (and, frankly, even if you are sure) I would advise claiming anyway. The one certainty is that if you don't claim you won't receive anything.

Very true, that’s good advice!
