There is another section of this forum that has a fair few threads on the subject.

The general position is that many TOCs, especially those with the more prestigious work, prefer to recruit internally. Therefore it is best to take a railway job (station staff or conductor) then see out one's time with that until an advert comes out. These roles should allow many of the interview competencies to be met.

Some TOCs do recruit externally however the ratio of applicants to positions is normally very high, although anyone is in with a chance if they can meet the interview requirements and pass the various aptitude tests.

Check the recruitment sections of the website of your local TOCs to see what positions are available.

For the OP's sake, I hope those aptitude tests don't include a requirement
to be able to type sentences in plain English without using textspeak... ;)

Welcome to the forum. There is a sticky thread about which is 81 pages long and you will probably find it very useful:
http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17674

In the UK, you need to apply for a Trainee Train Driver (i.e. you can't train yourself to become a Driver). They are extremely competitive and they consist of many assessments of which you will find much information on the link above.

You need to look at each individual Train Operating Company's career website to see whether they are recruiting. As someone has pointed out, it may be useful to work elsewhere in the railways. Good Luck!
