how to become a conductor

Hi everyone I am trying to get into the rail industry and become a conductor. I was wondering whether there is any courses you can take to give me a chance. I dont seem to to be having any luck with companies. I am not afraid of starting from the bottom of the ladder just cant seem to get my foot in the door????

It may as wise to start lower in the industry

Indeed, it's my ambition to progress to train crew at some point in the future but I applied for several jobs in the industry to get a foot on the latter. I was lucky enough to get a job in a booking office and I'm finding it an interesting, enjoyable, if at times frustrating job. Again, it's not the bottom of the ladder - but it's a job I see as a good stepping stone! My advice would be to keep applying for jobs that come up in the industry, whatever they are - as people keeping telling me "Once you're in, you're in!".

Thanks for your advice and replys. I didn't mean conductor was bottom of the ladder, far from it that's we're I'm aiming for at the top. I've applied at northern rail, first group and virgin as I live in the northwest

This is exactly what I have done, I started off as an agency worker doing gatelines, booking office and on-board crew, got a permanent possition with a TOC in a booking office and now I'm applying internally for either trainee driver possitions or conductor possitions (to be fair I'd like to be a conductor for at least a few years before I become a driver!) I've been in the company for two and a half years now though and it pays my bills and gives me free travel though!

Northern and Transpennine Express are your best bet to go straight in a s a conductor as both will recruit from outside the industry. It's my understanding that Virgin only promote internally to the Train Manager role, and CrossCountry seem to only ever want exoerienced conductors to minimise on training costs.
