How to avoid rail replacement !

Needing to go to Edinburgh for Uni open day in October . Rail replacement operating between Durham /Newcastle and Scotland on the Sat /Sun 7/8th October. Travelling from East Midlands so happy to go from Newark on the Friday night as have friends can stay with in Edinburgh. Need to travel back Sunday so looking for alternative routes …… xcountry down the WCML ? Can get picked up from derby / EMA ? I hate rail replacement would rather get national exoress so that might be an option to Durham then get a train south? Any thoughts?

As is usual when Newcastle - Edinburgh is closed, as well as rail replacement buses LNER are running direct trains London to Edinburgh/Aberdeen/Inverness via Carlisle so just book on one of these. Frequency is lower than normal service.
