I have a std off peak return, the out portion "valid until 04 Sept". I need this to be valid on the 5th as no point me even attempting the journey on the 4th owing to the northern strike. The return portion is ok as is. route is "any permitted", validity "as advertised".

Northern email are experiencing high volumes of traffic atm...

I'm hoping a trip to a northern rail ticket office sort this out easily, but would welcome comments...

If the strike goes ahead there will almost certainly be a general circular issued allowing tickets dated for the 4th to be used a day either side without further endorsement.

went to Barnsley station cos it's a northern one, various stories: the ticket is good for the 5th, there'll be a £10 admin charge, there's no record of the ticket on the system. then the guy rang someone up and told me to send the tickets in. never buying a ticket off the web again.

don't fancy the wcml on an invalid ticket with the excuse oh northern were on strike yesterday, so bought a new one for 5th.

will send old tix in for a full refund. northern's customer service is abysmal.

I see you have purchased a new ticket already for travel on the 5 September 2017. The best thing for you to do now is to return your old ticket (dated 4 September) to the retail who you got it from for a full refund without any administration fee, on the basis that you are unable to travel due to the strike action. I assume the latter is the reason based on what you have said.

For future reference however you may find that nearer to the exact date of the strike, Northern may have arranged for tickets valid for travel on 4th will also be accepted on 5th, including on other operators. Do it may not have been needed for you to buy another ticket. However, I see you have paid for a new one now so you are best refunding the first one without an administration fee.

It is not correct for an admin fee to be charged for this; you can either use the original tickets on the 5th or obtain a full refund.

It sounds like the OP has already purchased new tickets for travel on the 5th now. So, their best option is to obtain a refund for the tickets dated the 4th and make sure they do not pay an admin fee.
