As someone who is likely moving near the station in the next few months, I do hope the frequency ends up being more than 1 train per hour. Given the number of other stopping services that pass through, I really don't see why it can't be better, but I don't hold out much hope given some other stations in the Bristol urban area also have similarly poor frequencies (e.g. Bedminster gets 1 train an hour aside from the morning and evening peaks where its 2 an hour).

You will have to do what I did when I commuted from Montpelier 45 50 years ago: take your bike on the train if there's a gap in the service home (or vv!)

Now the new station is open and the timetable is out, does anyone have any thoughts on whether the timetable could be improved?

For those of us* unfamiliar with the service patterns in the Bristol area
- what passes through?
- what demand is there - where do people from Ashley Down want to go?
- what constraints (e.g. tight pathing, train already full, short platforms) are there that might stop trains calling there?

*Or maybe just me.

GWR
- 1 tph Cardiff Central – Taunton / Penzance
- 1 tph Cardiff Central – Portsmouth Harbour
- 1 tph Gloucester – Westbury / Weymouth
- 1 tph Worcester Foregate Street – Bristol Temple Meads

CrossCountry (doubt they'd be stopping; I think it's a four-track section with XC using the lines without platforms there)
- 1 tph Plymouth etc. – Edinburgh / Aberdeen
- 1 tph Bristol Temple Meads – Manchester Piccadilly

Yeah it would be evil stopping those trains at Ashley Down. I think we should instead increase the frequency of the Filton Abbey Wood to Bristol train and maybe open a new station at Horfield so we can provide a Bristol Metro Service.

increasing the Fulton Abbey Wood-Temple Meads shuttle to half-hourly will provide extra services without slowing down long distance trains. If this doesn't happen, the same questions will be asked when/if the Henbury line reopens (with an hourly service).

If the Henbury line doesn't happen, these services could be extended to Patchway or Bristol Parkway.

Realistically (rather than what I'd actually want), at the very least I think they need to add in an earlier first train and a later last train. Not sure what could make up the earlier train but for the last one theres a few Cardiff to Bristol stoppers that already stop at all the other stations which mean they have to run through the slow lines where Ashley Down has platforms - those seem like a no brainer to me. And they need to sort out the Sunday timetable so it's more regular, even if they aren't able to change the number of services - it's roughly a two hourly service but with some oddities so would be good to even those out - maybe actually running the shuttle on a Sunday instead of relying on other services could help there?

Of course I'd actually like if they'd also stop more services there in general to make it a roughly half hourly service in the week and at worst hourly on a Sunday only or ideally even more frequent than any of that, but I feel that is a much more difficult ambition!

The passing through has already been answered.

At least from seeing the local commentary over the last few weeks I'd probably guestimate local demand is mainly a mix of temple meads, Parkway (demand which isn't really served by the current timetable) and connecting into longer distance service, especially for London (which in theory can be provided by having a link to Parkway and having more frequent services to temple meads).

Constraints I'd imagine are mainly timetable and pathing related. For a start anything that usually uses the fast lines can't call as the station only has platforms on the slow lines, and obviously moving services to the slow lines has an impact on pathing of all the services that use Filton Bank. There is a potential short platforms issue - the station can take a 5 car turbo at most but that is usually fine as I've not known GWR to run 6 car formations and the IETs have selective door opening.

Evil? Really?

The Cardiff to south West services already are all shacks stoppers so adding an extra station onto them won't really make a difference to passengers.

And the same for the Westbury / Weymouth services - again very much all / most stations stoppers.

The problem with your suggestion is that you need more rolling stock and more staff, neither are going to be quick to happen. Stopping existing services that are already all stations stoppers is a much more realistic way to increase frequency, at least for the time being.

Simplifying the MetroWest service pattern and increasing frequencies would be the obvious next step.

Something like this would seem like a reasonable medium-term ambition:

2ph Weston-Super-Mare - Temple Meads - Severn Beach
2ph (Portishead) - Temple Meads - Filton - (Henbury)
2ph Temple Meads - Yate
2ph Temple Meads - Bath - Westbury

If everything was all-stop then Ashley Down gets 4ph.

CrossCountry and the other GWR services would run non-stop to Pakrway using the fast lines on Filton Bank, leaving the slow lines for MetroWest only.

Which leaves the market from the “Filton Bank intermediates” to Patchway and beyond completely unserved.

Obviously I can't speak for all, but as long as the frequencies are high enough then that is less of an issue.

We basically have the worst of both worlds atm at Ashley Down where we'd have to change at temple meads or Filton anyway, but frequencies are so low that it becomes a little bonkers and especially for shorter journeys you are waiting at Filton much longer than you are on the train for.

But if you were to have a service every 15 mins to Filton or Temple Meads then connecting onto those services that don't stop becomes much more acceptable.

Despite my previous comment longer term I fully agree with either a massively improved Filton (to be Henbury) shuttle or similar suggestions rather than relying on existing services to plug the gaps - but how we get from here to there is a challenge that i think has different short term (stop more services) and long term (new services) answers.

Yes, but you would have 4ph to Filton Abbey Wood for connections.

There may also be a case for adding Newport/Cardiff to MetroWest, with a 2ph Bristol-Cardiff stopper to supplement a 1ph semi-fast (Cardiff-Portsmouth), with the Penzance service cut back to Temple Meads.

Don't forget TFW want to run 1/2tph Cardiff Central to Bristol TM stopping services which will serve all stations between Patchway and Bristol TM been talk then the GWR services could be sped up

Yes I think that could be a good solution - 2ph all-stops + 1ph semi-fast, calling Filton-Abbey Wood and Newport only. I'm not sure there is enough demand for 2ph semi-fast?

Last I saw not in the plans, but I heavily suspect that is more down to the issues serving it in both directions than anything else. If someone can encourage network rail / gwr to get the footbridge back to be able to reopen the other platform I'd expect the mentioned potential TfW services to stop there given they are on about stopping everywhere else!

It'd be a bugger to path, I expect, but there are pushes at various levels to get Pilning properly reopened.

Pilning has potential if it was resited closer to the village.
