True but surely it would just be about creating a Southampton/Bournemouth to OOC HS2 connection? I suppose it would be quicker to just go to Waterloo and get the Northern Line to Euston. Or Crossrail 2 from Clapham Junction! I need to check my forehead again...

Well it would probably be cheaper to build the originally planned West London Line station at Old Oak Common than build Crossrail 2!
Capacity on the WLL would still be a pain with all the freight filling it up.

I'm surprised there's no scope for Southampton to Paddington services. With a stop at Hayes for Heathrow connections.
Mix of capacity on the GWML and Basingstoke junction I suspect will be the biggest factors, in addition to the revenue flow being primarily to central London and so slowing down those journeys by a diversion via Reading and stopping quite far from people's end destination doesn't make much headway with the DfT.

The interesting question on Southampton and Bournemouth is whether passengers would be willing to give up through trains to Birmingham and Manchester to allow a through service to Old Oak Common and Paddington.

CrossCountry could then terminate at Reading.

However, it is difficult to see how HS2 justifies that, given that in theory Old Oak Common could be a short train ride from Clapham Junction. Obviously that depends on an unfunded station on the West London Line.

I think your missing that we're and island and this isn't just catering to domestic travel.

Having a service which connects to an airport is perfect for international travel as:
1. We are an island. It is inescapable that to get off we have 3 options which are to fly, take a time-consuming boat or build a very expensive tunnel.
2. Getting to an airport is difficult as you have luggage but you have to leave what you aren't taking mainly your transportation to and from the airport so therefore trains are the best option as you can go from your home to the airport and not worry about leaving your transfer transport at home.
I was not just thinking of domestic air travel. Not sure how soon but world wide air travel is going to have to reduce as the emissions are a problem.

Whilst that would speed things up, I was basing the time on a like for like for the current situation rather than any potential future changes.

As others have pointed out, because of capacity issues, is not something which would be that easy to roll out - although one every (say) four hours would enable those for whom 2 changes was a barrier (but one wasn't) to switch to HS2.

Given there's bi-mode 80x it would be rather silly not to at least make use of the wires. There's presumably not a lot of extra cost to add the third rail shoes once you have the electrical gubbins in there, although that does depend on what design of traction motors you use and whether you would need additional transformers to make use of the 750v DC supply.

  • Long 530m platforms at Crewe, Warrington, Preston, Carlisle for splitting/joining 250m units.
This proposal fixes southern WCML capacity, and would have cost less than half of HS2 phase one.

I'd include passive provision for:
  • A second running tunnel to Tring, to allow high speed running all the way to Euston
  • Access to the high numbered platforms at Euston
  • Grade-separated both-ways crossover with the WCML fasts around Cheddington
Possible follow-on projects, incorporating the lessons learned from the first:
  • NPR Liverpool Manchester Leeds, wirh HS2 access along the Liverpool-Manchester alignment to new 530m platforms at Piccadilly or near Victoria and to near Lime Street.
  • Stafford bypass
  • HS2 continuation from Rugby South to Stafford with delta spurs off to Wigston for the MML, and to Water Orton.

The trend abroad has been for increasing tunnel sizes to avoid aerodynamic effects etc.
HS2 actually bucks the international trend in favour of larger and larger tunnels.

I'm not sure the marginal cost saving of small diameter tunnels is ever worth it.

Otherwise, I'm not sure how HS2 ever thought a surface route through the Chilterns was ever going to fly.
Either you tunnel under the lot or you are stuck in the M1 corridor.

You mean like the Northern Hub project, that turned out great.

Splitting HS2 up would just increases the chances that it would get cut, the best way to do it, to guarantee that it gets built, would be to build the entire thing all at once, all in one phase.

Why 530m? you don't need an extra 30m to split 2 x 250m sets. Why Tring, and why so slow? How does dumping itself at Hilllmorton/ Rugby alleviate any of the capacity issues when you are still running up the Trent Valley and along the Coventry corridor? Why do you need grade separation when you have bypassed the WCML and the crossing moves at Ledburn would be removed? What are you splitting at Warrington that you wouldn't at Crewe? I don't understand HS2 to Stafford when you are also proposing a bypass? What is the spur to Water Orton for? 4 tracks already exist between Water Orton and the approaches to New St. If you are going to Euston, why do you need a surface terminus at OOC? Crossrail on the WCML slows screws it up and doesn't release capacity for freight.

I will give this a go:

  1. Station at Euston
  2. Line to Birmingham would cling to the M1 corridor and operate in the Shinkansen style with stations at Luton, Milton Keynes Central, Northampton, Coventry and Birmingham Central (not sure exactly where).
  3. Beyond Birmingham Line would probably do something like Telford, Stoke-on-Trent, Manchester Airport (maybe, depending on what regional solutions are adopted), Manchester Piccadilly, Halifax and then Leeds.
  4. Service on the core line towards Birmingham/Leeds out of Euston would be ~11-12tph, in line with Shinkansen practice.
  5. However, use the fact that all trains have the same stopping pattern south of Luton to have a secondary service of 5-6tph superimposed to get HS2's ~18. This service would diverge south of Luton at ~230km/h to avoid disrupting the timetable.
What the secondary service does is something I'm still debating with myself. Three obvious options are to take over the MML Fast service, proceed on a secondary Shinkansen to Cambridge, or proceed on a secondary Shinkansen to Oxford.

  • The former won't save much time, but it would free us of the perennial capacity issues at St Pancras since the trains from Euston could be of essentially unlimited length. Might be able to remodel St Pancras and use them to expand HS1 Domestic services, probably requires sacrificing the theoretical Eurostar platforms at Stratford International for that.
  • Second option would have a station at Letchworth Garden City and then Cambridge, potentially possible to extend to Norwich ultimately, since 5-6tph of 400m length is quite a lot.
  • Third option would be a station at Aylesbury and then Oxford, potentially possible to extend west if you want. This requires going into the Chiltern AONB so is likely to be politically fraught in the extreme.
Trains on the core section would be built to Shinkansen cross section, if the MML service happens (along with services to Scotland, if they happen) would use Mini Shinkansen-type gap fillers to cope with the extra width.
The majority, if not all, core Shinkansen sets would be built to ~400m length, and probably have a couple of different sizes for the Classic Compatible sets.

Why limit to 140mph? The marginal cost of 300km/h would be, essentially, nothing.

What are you basing that on? The Chiltern tunnels are 200mm wider than the 320km/h Saverne Tunnel on LGV Est. It's the same as the Gotthard Base Tunnel, a full metre larger than the Brenner Base Tunnel

That's for if you want to run the WCML as a six-track railway, with crossovers between the high speed and the fast lines. It would give HS2 traffic access to Watford and Old Oak Common for Heathrow, and allow trains from Milton Keynes to access the direct tunnels to Euston. Plus operational flexibility for overnight maintenance etc.

What are you splitting at Warrington that you wouldn't at Crewe?
Crewe, Warrington (change for NPR), Preston and Carlisle all seem to have space for 500m platforms relatively easily, so it makes sense to keep 500m trains on that section. Agree most splitting would happen at Crewe. (But a lot of people will get off at Warrington, especially if NPR is offering 8tph to Liverpool and to Manchester, so you might shorten sets there.)

The absolutely critical scarce resource is platform space in Central London. Paris shows how RERs can release platforms at termini to provide capacity for long distance services.

Pendos don't work in multiple, their couplers are for emergency use only, it's why they stopped dragging them to North Wales after Alstom told them.

300kph dual track tunnels are very much possible, like North Downs on HS1 though that's much shorter.

It's congested through pretty much everywhere, Coventry corridor... Colwich Junction... all busy.

I'd prefer tunneling through Birmingham and having a through station and tracks instead.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel's completed bore inner diameter is apparently 7.7m.
The inner diameter of the Brenner Base Tunnel is about 8.1m

TBM bore diameter is not the same as the completed tunnel inner diameter, as differences in design of the tunnel lining will have serious impacts on the latter.

And both of these tunnels were built for 250kph.
The Chiltern Tunnels are significantly larger at 9.2m diameter, but this is comparatively small compared to tunnels being built for these speeds abroad.

This article by HS2 points out that comparatively few 350kph tunnels exist, but the one exemplar they cite abroad has a cross sectional area of over 70m2, which would be eqiuvalent to a diameter of around 10m once you include losses to the trackbed or so. HS2 tunnels are significantly smaller as the graph in the article points out.

Presumably you mean beyond Tring; Tring itself is on the Chiltern escarpment (as anyone who has cycled up The Twist, The Crong or Aston Hill will testify) and the station is south east of it.

Plenty of high speed tunnels available at twin track, particularly if digging through Chalk as per the Chilterns. I wouldn’t want to do it through the silts and muck coming out of London though, the chalk starts around Watford.

No, you just need the length of the two sets, depending on where the signal is.

Wendover is just because they shouted the loudest.

Build them both at the beginning and make it a proper speed, it would be cheaper for a start.

How do you alleviate the Cov corridor if you do that? You have also chopped out any connectivity to Birmingham Airport, its hinterland and the proposed growth around there by not going via Interchange. Birmingham International had 6.5 million entries and exits pre COVID. You would also need some pretty hefty grade separated junctions at the south end.
That's for if you want to run the WCML as a six-track railway, with crossovers between the high speed and the fast lines. It would give HS2 traffic access to Watford and Old Oak Common for Heathrow, and allow trains from Milton Keynes to access the direct tunnels to Euston. Plus operational flexibility for overnight maintenance etc.
That flies in the face of providing capacity if you are now putting trains from HS2 to Watford and vice versa. Overnight maintenance is already dealt with on the WCML via two track timetables. You would build HS2 with a wide enough "6 foot" to allow bi-directional running with a safe cess.

How does that relieve the Cov corridor if you are still using New St? As above, you have just got rid of a massive multimodal interchange at the airport. How would the redesigned Curzon St be any cheaper than what is proposed?

Its not high speed. 125mph up to Washwood Heath where it slows down.

So you would need a grade separated junction for the OOC spur on the mainline? That reduces capacity unless its line speed where it joins the main line.

Because I'd plan to access 10 platforms eventually, at perhaps 16-18tph.

Not even I would propose adding a flying crossover to a working mainline railway in a tunnel somewhere under Primrose Hill.

I'm proposing an 8m diameter straight tunnel that's good for 300km, single track. But for the first 20 years, run trains on two tracks in the one tunnel, to save costs. The size of Kilby tunnel suggests speeds will be limited to around 120-140mph.

Sure. The next stage is to bypass Rugby (to the East), but merging onto the fasts at Rugby South gives you access to the Trent Valley and the Coventry corridor. There seems to be space to add tracks between Rugby Station and Rugby South.

(These may not be needed if you terminate enough commuter trains at MKC or Wolerton)
South of Rugby, yes, but not much use of you can’t use it north of there…
I understood that the four tracks south of Rugby are more congested than the five / six tracks north of there. Is that not the case?

How do you know?
It's one station in London, instead of two; one tunnel out to the Chilterms instead of two; and half the length of high speed line. So best estimate (guess if you prefer) is half the cost.

Actually, less than half as I use New Street for initial services, and leave Curzon Street until later.

That wouldn’t be cheaper. The marginal cost of a slightly larger tunnel is essentially that of spoil disposal and a slightly larger lining ring. Everything else is the same.

If you were to come back after 20 years and convert it to single track, you’d have all the disruption of doing that plus the costs, and of course have lost 20 years worth of benefit at the higher speed. Just make it slightly larger in the first place.

Very, very expensively and disruptively. Remember how long it took to rebuild Rugby last time - and the WCML fast lines were effectively single track for a section for several months. You couldn’t do that now.

Rugby - Birmingham the line is essentially full. The Trent Valley isn’t, but it wouldnt take much to fill it up.

But 30+ miles of route in tunnel rather 23. And lots of ventilation / escape shafts to be built in the built up area of NW London, and that’s going to be expensive.

Because I'd plan to access 10 platforms eventually, at perhaps 16-18tph.

Not even I would propose adding a flying crossover to a working mainline railway in a tunnel somewhere under Primrose Hill.

I'm proposing an 8m diameter straight tunnel that's good for 300km, single track. But for the first 20 years, run trains on two tracks in the one tunnel, to save costs. The size of Kilby tunnel suggests speeds will be limited to around 120-140mph.

I know what your aiming at. I would have preferred more manageable chunks myself but then how much is wasted on links to the WCML that will become temporary. Plus all the disruption to the parts of the WCML getting these (temporary) links built. I also wonder if the advantages that the London to Rugby section brings would have been good enough to make it worth while. Basically you are saving money by not addressing the capacity limits on the Coventry corridor and Trent Valley Line. I suppose this means one has to get a line to Birmingham in one go to get anywhere with temptation.

That's a big dog leg to Birmingham.
But it gets you East without having to build Birmingham to East Midlands Parkway

It wouldn't be. But would give far better connectivity than just Curzon St / Moor St as currently proposed.

You could start with just the current plans, but with provision for adding more platforms and connections later (such as towards Kings Norton / Bristol).

It's much cheaper in the long run to redesign a city's rail network towards a long term vision, rather than doing it one line at a time.

You're probably right. But I still contend that it should be procured in stages, with honest review after each stage to learn how to do the next one better.

Anything"s better than commissioning the largest infrastructure project in Europe, and then losing all control over costs.

That I dont know.

But my educated guess is that it was almkst certianly cheaper. The linespeed through them is 320 km/h, which would need a big bore (150msq at least). Limiting it to, say, 270 km/h would reduce that. But the difference in bore size between 175 km/h (as per Kilsby) and 270 km/h would be relatively small, especially when allowing for walkways etc.

Notably the North Downs tunnel was not built with TBMs, and I think building the Chiltern tunnels without TBMs would be quite some challenge.

But, still, the principle of building a big tunnel for a twin track railway and then coming back to turn it into single track, in what would be the main fast line between London, the Midlands and North West, is goign to be horribly disruptive and therefore expensive.

Considering how long the Chiltern tunnels will be (16km/10mi), wouldn't it have been more ideal to engineer a larger single bore tunnel designed in a similar way to the North Downs Tunnel that was specifically widened in diameter to dissipate the air pressure? I know that this was also done because it wasn't possible to use ventilation shafts in this particular instance, but Japanese Shinkansen lines employ similar techniques, and the KTX network in South Korea used bell-shaped tunnel mouths to reduce noise pollution, particularly the sonic boom that is built up by trains speeding at 300km/h through an enclosed space. Is two smaller single bore tunnels really less expensive and efficient enough? Considering that part of why the Chiltern tunnel exists is visual pollution, won't ventilation shafts, if used, also be something of a similar eyesore even if it is a much smaller one?

These are needed for emergency escape as much as ventilation. The Chiltern tunnels have 5 of them.

Okay, I must admit, I didn't think of emergency escapes, and having given it more thought I think I should've compared the Chiltern tunnels more to the Alpine base tunnels such as the Gotthard which, while much longer, is also single bore tunnels running great distances, rather than the North Downs Tunnel which is comparatively shorter.

To be fair, would you actually have to change anything in the existing tunnel if your primary limitation is aerodynamic?

You could just order the signalling not to let two fast trains pass in the tunnel. You could either block the second track in the signalling system or keep them around for disruption with hard speed limits on them.

Although I agree the cheaper option is just to build the bigger tunnel.
We have the capability to dig tunnels out to 200+ square metres now with TBMs.

I'm not sure about the relative price of single track tunnel pairs and double track tunnels, I don't think there is much in it but conventional European practice prefers the single track tunnel solution these days.
