As you can see in my post under 'fgw' (should have typed FGW really) I was very surprised to see one last Friday.

Strange because many West Country trains used to be 158 for example I spotted a Central liveried 158 at Truro in 2006 and travelled on a TPE liveried 158 from Plymouth in 2007 pre-refurbs. This was when FGW had major stock shortages and the train was extremely overcrowded. Saying that today I took a ride on a crowded 150 from Liskeard to Plymouth. Two coach trains are not adequate

158 units are rare down at Exeter, even more so on passenger duties!!

Taunton is as far south as they go on a regular basis! I'm not 100% sure but I think only 1 link of conductors and Drivers at Exeter sign 158 units, that being the top link! Don't quote me on that though!!

Pacers and 150 units are the norm around Exeter! You will be very lucky to catchable 158 down there!!

158 units are predominately used on the CDF - PMH route as well as Brighton/Great Malvern! Also on the GCR - WEY route and some CDF - TAU runs!!

There are NO BOOKED Class 158 Passenger workings at Exeter!

There's a booked 158 to Exeter Saturday Night, returns back to Bristol area on Sunday morning. The Cardiff-Paignton and return service is also reguarly a 158 and a 150, although it is booked for a pair of 150s. FGW do have quite a few more 2 car 158s than 2 car 158 diagrams so a 158 running a 150 diagram is quite common.

Wouldn't know about Saturday nights, very rarely work them!! That's pub time!! Lol!!

Occasionally you might get a 158 vice a 150 on a CDF run, but that's the exception rather than the rule!! 158's are rare down at Exeter, but I agree they aren't forbidden!!

Are all SWT services that far west 159s?

Should be 159's to Exeter but rarely see's a 158/8 turn up along with a 159 but i've never heard/seen of an occasion where a single 158/8 goes there alone, but I suppose in theory, 158883 (on loan to FGW) could turn up there and confuse the heck out of everyone!

That's correct, SWT 158s are not diagrammed at all west of Salisbury - ie nothing on short workings on the Exeter route at all, and nothing to Bristol either. As Arriva158 suggests, it'll probably only ever happen if 159s are defective.

(Ignoing the FGW hired in unit obviously.)

Thanks both. I wasn't sure of the Salisbury splits (etc).

There have been a couple of 158s the last couple of weekends to Exeter, strengthening the Waterloo-Exeter trains as FGW were operating a less frequent service.

The FGW hire in unit returns to Salisbury each day and can be any 158. It runs on a set diagram on the Swindon-Cheltenham route.

158885 was in Exeter with a 159 on 27th March on an Ex Woking service. Looked very out of place there!

I think on Saturdays the hire-in 158 works (or used to work, haven't ridden the service for a while) the 0821 Southampton Central - Great Malvern service. I also noticed on Friday that the 1730 from Cheltenham Spa to Westbury was formed using the same 158.

During Dawlish airshow 2010, FGW hired a 159 for the Paignton-Cardiff runs.
The hire in 159 services were even displayed as "GW (SW)" on the Dawlish Airshow 2010 public timetable!
