How often do positions come up?

Say Northern Rail....how often do they recruit for trainee train drivers? Is it as and when needed? Or do they recruit? Every 6 months..every year? (longer?)

Out of interest how many train drivers does Northern have? What is the annual turnover? 5%,10%+?

Northern at Liverpool is normally a couple of times a year from what I have noticed. Obviously I’m guessing it could be different depending on location.

We would normally take on circa 90 drivers a year I believe the figure for last year possibly going back into 2017 is around 440. Training Academy on the west is still doing one drivers course a month

wow that's a lot more than I thought.

440 drivers....I guess the turnover is what 5-10% per year? (retirement) 90 is still a lot. Is the turnover higher or are they expanding?

Based on the jobs lists emailed out internally, there are usually trainee driver positions somewhere in the company at least once per month.

Yeah but you can’t say how often a company is taking on, it depends on TOC/FOC and business needs, really it’s just as and when.

Sorry perhaps I should've been clearer, I don't get to see the external jobs advertisements, but I get emailed internal jobs lists. I think most, if not all, trainee driver jobs are advertised to both internal and external applicants however the external ads are transient and probably get pulled within days once a certain number of applications are received. On average there are probably trainee driver jobs come up once per month - IIRC there haven't been any so far this year but before Christmas there were quite a few different ads for trainees at various depots across the company. There have also been several jobs advertised in recent months for driver trainers (classroom based at the Manchester training school) which should give a good gauge of likely future recruitment.

Does anyone know when GA may be likely to recruit ? I understand it’s a waiting game and have to be patient. But if anyone could advise I would be grateful
