Prior to the introduction of OTMR ("black boxes") there were many stories of drivers pushing units and locos to, and beyond, their limitations. 96mph in a 142 was the craziest I've heard, which must've been quite a wild ride!

Wasn't there also the 140 Club, or something along those lines, for drivers who had got a HST to at least 140mph? Unofficially, obviously :P

I vaguely remember that being posted on here a while ago.

Amongst some drivers on the GWML, this certainly was the case in the days before the HSTs were fitted with speed limiters.

Yes and managers complaining about drivers making up lost time after the trains were fitted with OTMR.

When they asked some of the quicker drivers why they weren't making up time anymore the drivers replied 'because you have fitted data recorders', the penny eventually dropped and the Managers stopped asking.

I thought I'd dig up this old thread because I'm led to believe that one or two additional 58s have been preserved, and no I'm not including 58016. Hasn't one been moved to the Battlefield line or a move is being planned?

Also, the amount of trainspotter wibble in this thread was unbelievable. Some people need a dose of reality.

There's a short article from 4th June that gives some useful detail of the current status of class 58 preservation in the UK:

Withdrawn by EWS in November 1999, 58008 has been scrapped by Raxstar at Eastleigh Works.

The Class 58 was one of five sold by DB Cargo earlier this year. It is the only one to have been scrapped, with 58012/023 moved to the Battlefield Line for restoration work, 58022 destined to donate parts to the LMS 10000 Project, and 58048 saved for preservation and planned to move to Leicester (where it will join already preserved 58016).

It is the ninth Class 58 to be broken up, joining 58002/003/014/017/019/028/037/045. Additionally, 58015/020/024/029/031/041/043/047 were sold to Transfesa in Spain and will not be returning to the UK.

The remaining ‘58s’ are owned by DB Cargo and stored in France.

Thanks for that, this is good news because I wasn't aware that so many 58s have been "saved". Whether or not the recent additions are actually restored remains to be seen, but this is a positive development nonetheless.

58012 - Battlefield Line
58016 - Leicester
58022 - Peak Rail (underframe to be used for this LMS10000 thing)
58023 - Battlefield Line
58048 - Battlefield Line

Thanks for that. I'm aware that 58016 is currently in Fertis but will be repainted into BR Railfreight at Leicester. Are the other locos in that list also in Fertis livery? Cheers.

58012 and 022 carry Mainline Freight triple grey, 58023 carries Mainline Freight aircraft blue and 58048 wears EWS red & gold.
