So this weeks trip is leaving Sunday afternoon, Ramsgate-Lincoln, stay overnight. Lincoln-Stockport-Bristol, stay overnight. Bristol- Bournemouth, stay overnight. Bournemouth-Sunderland-Ramsgate. By road that’s around 1254miles. Would hate to do this by road.

At a rough estimate, probably 800-900 miles per week on average, but then I work on the trains.

Excluding work, probably around 60 miles with a trip to London each week, or more if going on the occasional longer journey.

Week beginning 21 October: 287 miles
14 Oct: 77 miles
7 Oct: 940 miles
30 Sep: 422 miles
23 Sep: 159 miles
16 Sep: 211 miles (+ what would have been 134 miles on rail replacement buses)
9 Sep: 107 miles (+ what would have been 69 miles on rail replacement buses)
2 Sep: 456 miles

So an average of 358 miles per week over the last eight weeks without any rail transport for commuting, and with a lot of variation.

Far fewer than I used to when commuting between Basingstoke and Reading. I now primarily work from home, but I still have to go into the office because I work in healthcare facilities and you can't really do that totally remotely. So Reading to Basingstoke is about 15 miles, times two is 30 per day, which makes 150 a week (give or take since my parents live near Reading and I occasionally went there overnight, particularly during the recent strikes).

The main port of call is otherwise Windsor, and is effectively twice the difference from home from Reading, so 60 miles round trip, but I tend to cut corners on the way home since a bus from our Windsor office to Slough is just as easy as going back into the centre of Windsor and waiting for a train. I don't think it saves any time, per se, but I tend to get impatient while waiting for transport and also can't stand around for too long due to a gammy ankle. I'd never have thought I'd say this ever but thank god for Slough station. I don't go up that often either -- although next month will be busy as everyone tries to get everything done before the Christmas Party starts.

I do recall hearing that King Charles isn't as fond of Windsor Castle as his mother was, so maybe he'll let me borrow the keys to his flat there when I'm next up. He is, very very very technically speaking, my boss, so...at least it would be better than the Travelodge.

Sigh. A girl can dream, can't she?

Three return trips a week Sanderstead to Victoria. About 24 miles a day. Plus a varying mileage on Saturday or Sunday to umpire hockey in London or, on Saturdays, parkrun by public transport.

That’s this weeks journeys nearly over, just a 160 mile or so return trip into London. So my overall trip had 2 cancelled trains, EMR Newark to Lincoln so jumped on the LNER service that was around 10 mins behind, the Cross Country service from Reading to Bournemouth so had to jump on a GWR to Basingstoke and then get an SWR to Bournemouth. Most of the journeys in between were more or less on time other than the Grand Central that was around 20mins late into Kings Cross tonight, plenty of time to catch the train back to Ramsgate though. Time to plan next weeks journeys now.

My weekly mileage varies, but I am consistently over 10,000 miles a year - usually somewhere around the 11,000 miles mark. That's an average of around 210 miles a week.

In terms of lifetime mileage, I'm currently on 518,455 miles - probably a bit more, albeit not massively so, as I won't have logged any trips I was taken on at a very young age.

Back in 1988 I did 28810 miles
In 1998 I did 811 miles in the UK and 6157 miles in Ireland
In 2008 I did 35 miles
In 2018 I did 1337 miles
Last year I did 2722 miles
This year I have done 0 miles
This reflects the lack of loco hauled trains
Most of last year's mileage was on a trip to the Northeast to do the 68s before they got the chop from TP.

At one point for work, I was travelling approx. 280 miles a week by rail. From the Midlands to South Wales, commuting around South Wales, and then back to the Midlands.

XC became the bane of my existence!

I have been recording the distance data for all public transport journeys I made since 2022.

Here is the distance I have recorded on trains (here, trains mean conventional trains (including high speed trains), i.e. not metro / light rail / tram / monorail / etc.):
2022: 26610 km (16535 miles, 317 miles / week on average)
2023: 19275 km (11977 miles, 230 miles / week on average)
2024 up to date: 15751 km (9787 miles, 222 miles / week on average)
