How many constituencies you have visited?

Once again I've been looking at lists and with politics being in the news an awful lot, I have been checking how many of our 650 constituencies I have been in or passed through but not where the route is a border.

As well as the 18 constituencies of Northern Ireland, my to-do list includes:
Gosport
Brighton - Kemptown
Leicester East
Sheffield Heeley
Northampton North
South Shields
Edinburgh North & Leith
Banff & Buchan
Na H'Eileanan An Iar
Orkney & Shetland

The one parliamentary constituency I am sure I have never visited and have no intention of visiting as long as I am resident in it is Southport, where I currently am, since by definition I am physically unable to make a visit. Other than that I’m not sure. I must have passed through hundreds. I notably went through the North Shropshire constituency on the way to Birmingham shortly before the by-election.

I wonder if you have to do them again when the boundaries change. But as you say, why would it matter. I must have passed through at least half in my lifetime, but I have no idea where the exact boundaries are, and don’t really care.

Doubt many party political leaders or media correspondents have ever visited all the various constituencies across the length and breadth of the UK.

They are normally both only ever interested in marginal, swing seats.

And, as you say, for anyone actually wanting to tick off the 650, how would you know when you've crossed over from one parliamentary constituency area boundary into another, particularly in an urban area?

Counting up, I have voted in 8 different parliamentary constituencies. Two while living at the same address due to boundary changes.

I found what I assume is an up to date constituency map with a Google Maps overlay so just took my observation from that.

Indeed constituency maps get redrawn fairly often so my insurance was making sure I had passed through more than the edge before saying I've been there. I was surprised by how big an area of land the Tories currently represent.

I always use the pencil they tie with a piece of string just in case you walk off with it.

At last year’s local elections they gave us short pencils and told us we should take them with us when we left to avoid infection. Of course, the exit was through a narrow passage without signage so that everybody was milling about trying to find the correct door.

I see that double-accounting is creeping in already.

What surprises me is that visits by senior politicians to constituencies, where they speak to say 100 party members, are assumed to persuade more people to vote for them.

No idea how many constituencies I've been to, the boundaries change, and I dislike the current political system (the idea of chosen ministers to run departments, MPs voting on issues not effecting them, etc are wrong) so I can't vote for anyone who shares my views.

South Shields is well worth a visit, there's a rebuilt Roman Temple there, and if you use the ferry, there's the Sambuca restaurant in North Shields, best food in Northumberland.

I can't say I've ever consciously ticked off constituencies, but it's something I've sometimes noticed, and I'm glad to see I'm not alone in that!

A lot depends on how you define a visit. I wouldn't consider travelling through a constituency by train to be a visit, but travelling through one by bus (unless it's dark and running along a motorway) feels much more like a proper visit. Then there's the question of time: I visited Stansted Airport as a young child but don't remember it - should that count as a visit for Saffron Walden?

Going by the strictest definition: requiring me to have set foot there recently, I think my total is 278. I track all of my walks so could use GIS software to identify most seats I've been to, and then I counted up the remaining places where I know I've visited but I've never logged a walk. If you include bus journeys I'd easily hit a majority, and if you include rail as well I think it's getting on for 400 (but I haven't checked - and the fact so many boundaries run along lines would make doing so difficult).

My "to do" list is obviously very long - it includes all of South Yorkshire, all of East Anglia, and basically all of the North West except for Liverpool/Manchester city centres (and parts of Cumbria and Lancs). Fortunately two of the areas where I've the most gaps - rural Scotland and Wales - both lose constituencies in the boundary review, while London and the shires gain constituencies, so those changes might actually increase my total.

My constituency has a byelection upcoming, the party HQ has had visits by Streeting and Rayner already.

We've had visits from a couple of ministers in recent months. They are never announced in advance; all we get is something on the MP's social media with a gurning photograph a day or so later. Its as if they don't want them to meet the electorate

I actually don't know. Counties is easier, let's assume ceremonial counties as these are probably least controversial (is there already a thread for this?)

An interesting variation on this is which constituencies you can't actually visit by train - i.e. does not have a NR station. North Cornwall is one - although the Cornish Main Line briefly pops into it as does the Newquay branch. Bodmin Parkway station is a few hundred yards outside.

Gosport, Louth & Horncastle and Staffordshire Moorlands don’t appear to have any Network Rail lines in them, although two have preservation groups. There are probably others in built-up areas.

I cant tell you how many I have visited. With some research i can tell you which ones I have lived and voted in based on the constituencies as they are today:

• Durham
• Sedgefield
• Richmonshire
• Darlington
• Great Yarmouth
• North Norfolk
• Broadland
• North Devon
• Torridge & West Devon
• York Central
• York Outer
• Newcastle Central
• Newcastle East
• Milton Keynes South
• Paisley & Renfrewshire ( although think that was more to ensure I was on the roll somewhere.)

They aren't in any real order btw and some I have lived in more than once.
