I had my assessment for signaller on 08/09/2015, so 4 weeks ago. The next day I was informed by HR that I had passed and was in the top 5 so I would be referred for interview.

Since then the online portal is showing 'application under consideration for assessment 2' which presumably is the interview.

On the day of the assessment HR gave the impression that they could not help any further than the assessment process, as then details are passed to line managers whom arrange the interviews. So is it just a waiting game, or is there anyway I can chase it up?

I've read that nothing happens quickly with network rail, but I thought it may not be so drawn out considering it's only an 18 month contract!

Call HR. You can only ask! They know more than we do.

Also, it won't be an 18 month contract. You're in now.

As TomBoyd says, can be a very drawn out process. Think I had to wait 2 to 3 months for interview after assessment. Gives you time to research the non technical skills though :)
