Not really sure which part of the forum this goes in, but I'm sure it will be moved if necessary. :p

I am travelling back from Benidorm on 22 September (I realise tickets aren't out for this yet). I am due to land at 14:05 (Terminal 2).

How long do I need to allow from landing to getting to the train at the airport station? Or am I best just booking an open ticket back to Scarborough?

Just buy an open ticket. There are far too many variables involved in flying to make it worth buying an advance.

Land at 14:05, Manchester is a big airport so if you land at the far end of the runway you could be looking at 15/20m max to taxi to the gate. Then 5 or 10 until you are actually off the plane. Then how long to get through passport control, customs, luggage. And that's assuming you left Benidorm on time.

Personally I would bite the bullet & buy an open. Even if you land on time & get quickly through security, I would give yourself at least 45 mins to an hour minimum. And then of course your flight could be delayed or even early landing, so at least with an open you can jump on the next Piccadilly service & go for a drink or something there whilst you wait for the Scarborough. It's certainly what I would do, as I've been nearly an hour early and over an hour late getting back to Manchester & through security (although they were both from Greek Islands).

I would totally agree with the advice.....I'm coming back from Spain into a much smaller airport (Bournemouth) soon and I haven't even considered Advance tickets. Toooo Risky! If you were to miss your booked train I'm guessing the Single fare Manc Airport to Scarborough to be fairly pricey....not something I would want to shell out on right on the end of a holiday!!

Buy and airport advance ticket prices start from £15 one way for and adult with no railcard, from Manchester Airport to Scarborough on the 1533, change at Manchester Piccadilly, and if your plane is delayed take your ticket to the Rail ticket office at the airport station and they will endorse your ticket to travel on the next available service (1633).

You are fairly safe with Advance... providing you are prepared to queue to get "proof of delay" and queue again for the delay to be verified and the ticket "endorsed" and providing you're confident your plane won't be more than 3 hours late.

All TPE Advance fares from Manchester Airport are automatically eligible for the 'Airport Advance' easement
Easements
Tickets are train specific; however to accommodate inbound flight delays, journeys from John Lennon & Manchester Airports can be made on the next available TransPennine Express service up to 3 hours after the departure time stated on the ticket. Where no services depart within this time, the next TPE service may be used. Passengers wishing to use this must have their tickets endorsed at the Ticket Office before boarding the train. This is the only difference to other Advance tickets.

I'd give it a minimum 90 minutes (it may well not take so long) to be on the safe side, and be prepared to do as detailed above if the FLIGHT is delayed. However, if the delay is within, say, immigration, I'm unsure as to how well such a request would be received.

I too would say leave plenty of room so 1533 seems a good bet, but of course in the unlikely event that your flight is more than a few hours late, a new ticket will be needed

Just get the open and play it safe. I've flown back to MAN with an Advance going home before, and the risk of missing the train adds too much hassle and stress on the journey. Especially since ATW and Northern don't have that thing TPX have if you're late coming in so you're fogged! Fortunately I made the train quite happily, although I was only travelling with hand luggage and was quite used to barging my way around the airport to get to the station in a hurry. Turns out I could drunk 3 coffees in the time I had to spare at the station mind, but hey!

Enjoy the trip though :)

I would tend to go with the open. The converse scenario is that if the plane pulls into the stand at 13.45 and you get a quick run through the airport you might make the 14.40 - and you don't want an hour at the station because you bought an advance, right?

By the way, if you are buying a single, split the ticket at York as it works out about £12 cheaper.

I would personally get an open ticket as the cost difference isn't enough to justify my waiting around for a train.

However if you plan enough time to get through security, pick up luggage and get across the airport to the station you should be fine.

If delayed by less than three hours then you can fairly easily get a later train.

In the unlikely event you are delayed by more than 3 hours then you may well be eligible for compensation from the airline under EU rules.

There is however a very slim chance that your flight is severely delayed and you are not eligible for compensation and need to pay for a single ticket yourself.

So you need to compare the amount you save with advance fares to the open ticket cost, compared to the cost and likelihood of having to pay for a full fare ticket. Think of it as insuring yourself. And also how much you prefer the flexibility of open tickets.

would holiday insurance cover late arrival?
They usually cover alternative travel from the initial airport so chances are they would try their best to argue that an onward train is not covered.

As for timings, completely different circumstances but I was on a Flybe flight this week that landed at 11.10 at T3 and caught the 11.29 to Piccadilly!

Wow, that is impressive - 19 mins?.....I've only ever come close to that at the relatively tiny Southampton Airport - but still couldn't beat it I'm sure!:D.

In my recent experiences, usually in T1, there can be long delays at passport control, particularly if a few big planes have arrived at once. The wait for baggage can be disappointing too. I would never risk an advance, especially because those delays are not flight delays as such, and I wouldn't bet on your ticket being honoured
