How important is your age AND your address?

I am in my early 50's and in very good physique and health, do I still have a good opportunity to get a job with First? Also I have been in Spain for 20 years and wish to return to the UK. I have been applying for jobs all over the country and have had no joy as yet. I've stated that I will move to within 20 minutes of my workplace if possible, I have no family or home town, so I am flexible and have told them so. I am also a British citizen. Any feedback would be good folks. :neutral:

Companies will always take on candidates who have 5 years in them so apply for everything however there is stiff compitition for the younger applicant but I have interviewed many people for the railway and have taken on many over 50, sometimed experience is worth everything

Thanks TDK for your reply, it gave me immense encouragement. I have stated to HR that I am available to work anywhere in the UK so here's hoping I will have a stronger opportunity. I have been waiting for more than 2 months now with some applications, so they must be interested. Any feedback from anyone regarding my topic would very much be appreciated.

im well over fifty,and have applied for conductor role at CrossCountry and got to assessment stage,also got to assessment stage with first capital,so just stick with it.ps did you know there are Tram driver roles at croyden/good luck

I live in London and I am looking to re-locate to Liverpool, the TOC's that I have been applying with in the Liverpool area have had no issues with the distance as long as you state that you are looking to re-locate.

I am currently at final interview stage for a trainee driver position with First, they stated at the initial assessment stage that all candidates at the assessment either lived within a 50 mile radius or had said on the application forms that they were willing to re-locate. I am mid 40's and age hasn't been an issue.

I'm more than the statutory distance myself and this hasn't affected as I've expressed willingness to relocate.

I'm early 40's but clearly had a hard paper round as a kid, given my glorous mullet of silver hair.

You just need to show them, that although there may be a little snow on the roof, there's still a fire in the basement !

Just read my post, should have said 50 minute radius not 50 mile. Like I said though none have seemed too bothered if you show willingness to re-locate.

I cant really comment on the issue of address but let me offer a word of encouragement on age. I applied for a trainee depot driver position at 54 got the job and started recently aged 55. It can be done go for it and make the most of your experience.

Letmedrive, I hope they let me drive too! I am finding things very hard stuck in Spain, my job went in March and I didn't get paid. Don't get dole here, and there are no jobs. Just living on savings, it's so sad to say there are thousands of expats like me suffering. I keep applying for posts all over the UK but I just can't get a sniff, at least First keep you up to date regarding what's happening.

Why don't you get back to the UK? The competition for jobs is so great (I just went through a process which had 1100 apps for 6 vacancies!) that an address in Spain is probably not getting through the sift. Rent somewhere in the region you want to apply to, surely this would help with any application.

I have now stated that I will move anywhere in the UK, so it looks like I am getting through the sifts. I am waiting for 10 jobs or so, all of them between 4 and 9 weeks. I just need a break from somewhere. I hope there is a manager somewhere reading the posts and understands what it feels like to be in this position.

Thanks very much Itchy, I really want this, but I feel so far away, but I will keep pushing. I know that First can look at all my applications if need be, it might take the sympathy vote to get in though as there is soooo much competition out there.
