It's no worse in its origins than the series of lines joined together that form both the WCML and the ECML — it's just that in the years since Grouping much more money has been spent on those routes.

Almost like they're more important or something...

How are bus services from Sheffield to an airport in Doncaster any way relevant to the importance of the ECML?

It's not, which is exactly the whole point of this topic - It's simply a way for a well known Pro MML supporter here to push their agenda that the MML is far more important which it isn't.

It would add the possibility of Mansfield, that most neglected town with its population in excess of 100,000, having a direct service to Peterborough and London.
Feel free to put in an open access proposal for Kings Cross-Peterborough-Grantham-Nottingham-Mansfield!

I've retired and I was not ever in the Open Access business but it's quite possible that such an operation could be commercially successful! Assuming of course that paths were made available and trains were allowed to stop at Peterborough and Grantham.

You could get to Mansfield today via the MML with a simple reversal at Nottingham (extending an existing service) if you really wanted to...

Still has services from Sheffield..... Bus or Rail don’t matter
It would matter to me.

As another poster pointed out the only direct rail service from Sheffield to an airport is to Manchester.

Of course if you change, the Sheffield serves any airport in the UK which has a station - which doesn't include Doncaster

Well, there's direct trains from Sheffield to Liverpool South Parkway, Luton Airport Parkway, Southampton Airport Parkway, Birmingham International (Sundays Only)... and, if you want to be tenuous, East Midlands Parkway (plus National Express coach services to Heathrow/ Luton/ East MIdlands etc and an hourly Stagecoach service from Sheffield to Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport).

But then maybe that's a topic for another thread - How Important Are Air Links To Sheffield?

btw, Sheffield only has a very limited service to Luton Airport, most of the time you need to change at Leicester.

In my opinion, I think the East Coast Mainline is very important! It's well known for its green Flying Scotsman / LNER steam locomotive and the blue Mallard A4 which topped 126mph around Grantham I understand (I'm only 26 but I know quite a bit put it that way :))! Let's not forget the Class 55 Deltic - I'm guessing travelling in the Mark 1 and Mark 2 coaches must have been relaxing - ok before the HST's the rolling stock was known to not be great but still...

I bet all the ECML's history are all the reasons why LNER are keeping the buffet on the Azumas and mostly running 9 coaches but with more seats in place of the Class 91 / Mark 4 and HST fleets!

I'm very pleased that 9 coaches will run to and from Inverness and Aberdeen LNER said in a magazine. I can imagine 5 coaches receiving complaints if scheduled from 9 down to 5. This rather suggests LNER want to keep their name as well as their customers - good on them I say :)!
