Wouldn't it be possible to use a generator van instead of ETH to provide heating & lighting for the coaches?

With regards to this thread http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=27091&page=2, if in the unlikely situation the Voyagers are shunted off XC, North Wales Coast and Birmingham - Scotland services and replaced by loco-hauled services, couldn't some 56s be reinstated to haul these trains?
This is because there are many 56s formerly used on LGV Est construction trains dumped at Healey Mills and other places. Surely giving them an F exam and regearing them for 90-100 mph operation would be cheaper than ordering new diesel locomotives to haul these trains? I do recognise that 67s and maybe a new type of diesel would be necessary since there probably wouldn't be enough 56s available.
Just a thought![]()
"...so we decided to find out!"![]()
Ask Muppet56097, he owns one of the damn things!if TopGear has taught me anything its never to say "How hard can it be?" !!!!!!!!!!!
I seem to recall a class 56 being used years ago on a Cross Country service to Bournemouth, back when it was all loco-hauled stock, but I imagine this was only due to a class 47 failure?

If Grids can't provide ETH, it must have been boiling inside!
Why the fascination with 56s?
Why the fascination with 56s?
Is it the power, or is it the "novelty" or is it just that there's lots of rusty ones sitting round rotting?

The last point really. If some ex-IE generator vans could be bought & regaged then using 56s on some passenger services would be a possibility. Furthermore, there are lots of ex-Fertis 56s that could be brought back to life.
COME ON LADS LETS DO IT!!!all those grids sitting at crewe doing nothing, what can we do with them, are they for sale, for scrap or are they just going to sit there getting rotten
colas are using 56s to haul there freight they dont seem to have any problems there running at 75mph
The reason I suggested 56s is that they're more powerful than 47s (3250bhp) and they could work alongside 67s. Also 56s could be fitted with ETH.
Yeah I know Hanson`s /3`s are being used by colas, I mean all those that are stored up at Crewe and the ex-Fastline /3`s come to think of it I dont see why Hanson dont get those saves them the £1mill refurb for 314 and 315
