How far would you go for your hobby?

I've thought once or twice about how I live in a place where there's nothing interesting railway wise. Nothing happens here, and are stuck with the 4 electrics to and from Glasgow and that's it! All the interesting stuff happens elsewhere.

Take Manuel for example. It's a junction between the mainline and the Bo'ness and Kinniel. Interesting things do happen here! Now, if something were to happen early morning (see link) or through the night, I'd miss it because I'd have no way of getting there, but that issue is nothing a tent and a sleeping bag won't solve. I know the area around Manuel is countryside (does anyone know if it's public or private land?) so I'd assume little issues would arise should I camp to see 26024 collect a special delivery from the E&G.

There's a question in here as well; is it too far? Is camping out to see special train movements just plain madness? How far would you go just for the trains?

Living in a place where the most interesting thing to come past is the Network Rail leaf clearer, I can say that I am perfectly happy to view special train movements over the internet. And normal ones too. Anything up to 50 years after they happen is fine.

Might explain why I don't have any picture for Guess the Station...

I also have been to China for Beijing Subway, loco haulage, some narrow guage electrics and kettles, Shanghai Maglev and Shanghai Subway...

Anywhere on the mainland, but I just 'dont do' foreign or even Irish railways, just doesn't interest me, would seriously love an 'All Line Rover' for a week, or 3!!

Erm, I'm not quite sure how to break this to you 185, so I'm just going to come out and say it...

Those Mk3s you went 26 hours and around the world to see? They weren't Mk3s, they were actually Mk2s. Sorry.

Personally I think anymore than a 3 hour 'fester' at a station is taking it too far. Then again I'm crap at spotting, numbers mean nothing to me and I hate waiting around, I would rather pay more or take the long way round rather than wait for things like buses or trains. I have been known to take a taxi if the wait is for more than half an hour for a bus.

I was the same until around 15 years ago (apart from Ireland), but one visit (to Belgium) and I was hooked

Answer to the OP's question is, if I am interested / motivated enough then anywhere in the world. The only reason I havn't been further afield than Europe is that there is enough of interest to keep me going there for the moment - though have to confess that I have pretty much exhausted most possibilities of personal interest in the UK, Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Portugal at present.

I'm not really interested in foriegn railways due to the fact that I have to be bothered to learn about them. I do have a fasination for certain class 50 related Portugese diesels and some german stuff.
