In contrast, TOCs are much more careful; you may not people such as like Brian Souter, but he comes from humble origins and keeps track of the pennies.

Have to agree there, he also seems more willing to take risks, it's interesting to compare Stagecoach standards of service provision (especially when it comes to frequency) with the very risk adverse First Group.


While I don't agree with his religious views or all of his company's behaviour, I do have to take my hat off to him as a proactive businessman as opposed to the Bowker type who seem to just run a business into the ground, get a good payoff and then walk straight into an unrelated job

Ah yes the Quality Bus Corridor or something along those lines, funding that at the same time as the tram. Still, more suitable as you say than compared to Harrogate line.

BRT - Bus Rapid Transport?

A complete political compromise which would be no use to anyone.

They started off selling it as a "tram" equivalent, from Parkgate Shopping Centre to Sheffield (via Rotherham), then it was slowly downgraded (no "Guided Busway" sections, no Parkgate section, no dedicated route, basically just a bus route...

...however the *real* reason for doing it was Rotherham wanted to get away with a new route under the M1, and this "BRT" was seen as an excuse to do it.

As you seem to know anyway, marketing buses as a tram equivalent along selected corridors through the use of traffic signal priority, segregated bus lanes and those dreaded guided busways. And often used as a buzzword to cover "buses-with-the-wheels-covered-over-to-look-a-bit-like-trams", as seen in York and Swansea.

Too many accronyms these days, hard to keep track. No wonder nearly every booklet or document these days has a list at the back several pages long.

FTR is the First tram buses in York, Swansea and Leeds. Apparently it is short for "future" but nothing futuristic about them. I still think it means f**k the rest (as people who use the other services in York will understand) Whoever had the bright idea of installing a self-serve ticket machine must have a few screws loose.

Doesn't work over here though, that's why there are now 'hosts' on the FTRs. Been on a few times when the host has been ill and no replacement (so free ride) and also when the bus is so full that they can't get down right to the back.

Yup, I prefer your explanation of the "FTR" acronym than the officially stated one. Much closer to the truth.

Self-service ticket machines where there's no chance of having the ticket inspected were never going to work in Britain. What do people think the citizens of Britain are: Honest?
