If I buy a ticket between A and B, with many possible TOC's operating on the route, how does the money get shared?

I remember this coming up a few years ago on an Inverness to London open fare. GNER & Scotrail got the lions share due to direct trains but then a cut was given to Virgin WC, Virgin XC, Northern Spirit, First NW & further down the chain even Midland Mainline, WAGN & Silverlink in case you went via any route. So complicated.

Also Chiltern, First Great Western, Central Trains, National Express East Anglia, Arriva Trains Wales, and quite possibly some more that I've missed.
