If I buy a ticket between A and B, with many possible TOC's operating on the route, how does the money get shared?

The TOC or third party who sells the ticket (at a ticket office, ticket machine, online or on-train) gets a certain percentage, even if they don't run trains on that route. Then the rest is divided by a mechanism called ORCATS:

I remember this coming up a few years ago on an Inverness to London open fare. GNER & Scotrail got the lions share due to direct trains but then a cut was given to Virgin WC, Virgin XC, Northern Spirit, First NW & further down the chain even Midland Mainline, WAGN & Silverlink in case you went via any route. So complicated.
