How does refrenecing work for job offers

.i would just like to know how a t.o.c goes about refrencing people if offered a position ,do they ask months before or is it after you have been giving a postion.
Also what type of references do they ask for ? Is it from someone like your doctor etc or just the normal ex boss type of thing .

They don't ask doctors for a reference as the doctor will usually have no idea who you are other than the guy with x, y and z disease and that annoying cough.

They are looking for folk who can describe your working abilities and attributes and would write to, if required, the referees that you stipulate who can be anyone with whom you have a professional relationship.

For the TOC I'm with they asked for references when I started employment with them. They said if they didn't receive any of them in 30 days my contract would be terminated.

This a complicated matter, some companies will insist on references well before the offer and some will offer a job and then check the references, only once have I had to turn someone down after a job offer because of a poor reference as the candidate lied in interview about their sickness record and attendance and HR were not having any of it. To be fair generally it is just formality and it is a rare occurrence that anyone is refused on a reference.

It is advisable to get references from ex managers who you have been employed with.
